Futurescapes: Designers for Tomorrow's Outdoor Spaces
Richardson Tim
,
2011
The urgency of global climate change has made the early twenty-first century one of the most productive periods in landscape and garden design. Clients corporate, civic, and private are committed to the creation of innovative outdoor spaces. Curated by one of the world s leading critics of contemporary landscape design, this collection profiles work by fifty design studios through texts, up-to-date projects, easy-to-read plans, and photographs. The practices have been chosen for their innovation and their unique contribution to current debates in landscape and garden design. The selection spans well-established names, such as Patrick Blanc (France), Fernando Caruncho (Spain), Dan Pearson (UK), and Stephen Stimson (US) to smaller, lesser-known studios, such as Ossart & Maurie res (France), Wette und Kunecke (Germany), and Landscape India (India). Five essays identify and explain the prevailing preoccupations and practices of today s designers with themes that range from the recent predilection for creating new landforms to the trend towards eco-expediency.

Deciphering Ancient Minds
Lewis-Williams J. David
,
2012
How did ancient peoples-those living before written records-think? Were their thinking patterns fundamentally different from ours today? Researchers over the years have certainly believed so. Along with the Aborigines of Australia, the indigenous San people of southern Africa-among the last hunter-gatherer societies on Earth-became iconic representatives of all our distant ancestors and were viewed as either irrational fantasists or childlike, highly spiritual conservationists. Since the 1960s a new wave of research among the San and their world-famous rock art has overturned these misconceived ideas. Here, the great authority David Lewis-Williams and his colleague Sam Challis reveal how analysis of the rock paintings and engravings can be made to yield vital insights into San beliefs and ways of thought. This is possible because we possess comprehensive transcriptions, made in the nineteenth century, of interviews with San informants who were shown copies of the art and gave their interpretations of it. Using the analogy of the Rosetta Stone, the authors move back and forth between these San texts and the rock art, teasing out the subtle meanings behind both. The picture that emerges is very different from past analysis: this art is not a naive narrative of daily life but rather is imbued with power and religious depth.

Marilyn
Ricci Stefania
,
2012
The Museo Ferragamo in Florence pays homage to Marilyn Monroe with a major exhibition and a catalogue dedicated to her a half century after her death. Like other divas of the silver screen (Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo), Marilyn also loved to wear Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. The exhibition and catalogue dedicated to her are the result of long research and preparatory work, presenting items from the actress' wardrobe worn on the set or in her private life, as well as important documents that reveal the actress' managerial side, her skill and determination in building and grooming her success. A well endowed collection of photographs of Marilyn taken in her day-to-day life are juxtaposed with the power of the archetype and the endurance of the myth, the greatness of which perhaps resides in the stars double nature as spiritualized female and pop icon. Measuring themselves against the myth and the chronicles, the curators have sought to interpret the genesis of certain famous photographs (by Beaton, Stern, Barris, Greene) portraying Marilyn in classic poses. They have compared these portraits with famous works of art from the past, representing older expressions of similar poses and expressions, from the balanced pathos of French painter Jean-Baptiste Greuzes Alessandro morente to Botticellis Venus.

Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Conde Nast
Herschdorfer Nathalie
,
2012
Fashion photography is said to have begun with the distinguished American photographer Edward Steichen in 1911, and in the more than hundred years since then the genre has attracted some of the most talented photographers in the history of the medium. Many of them started their careers thanks to the editors and art directors of Vogue, Glamour and other Conde Nast publications. This book, featuring the work of 85 of the great fashion photographers past and present, drawn from the Conde Nast archives in New York, Paris and Milan, illustrates the early work of such celebrated practitioners as Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Corinne Day, Ellen von Unwerth and Mario Testino that appeared in the pages of the companys magazines. The book is arranged chronologically from 1910 to 2010, and each plate section is interleaved with texts that recount the major photographers of the period and the changing styles of photography and fashion. The book also includes an interview with Franca Sozzani, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, essays by Olivier Saillard and Sylvie Lecallier from the Musee Galliera, Paris, and an introduction by author Nathalie Herschdorfer, photography historian and curator. A brief biography of each photographer is included at the back of the book.

The Book of Kells
Meehan Bernard
,
2012
One of the most remarkable manuscripts to survive from the early Middle Ages in Europe, the Book of Kells was probably painted around 800 in a monastery at Iona in Scotland or Kells in Ireland, or perhaps in both places. Extraordinarily inventive and intricate imagery accompanies the texts of the four Gospels: full-page depictions of Evangelists and their symbols, lavish honorific openings to the Gospels, extraordinary initials, and decoration that combines complex interlace, animals, and human figures. This newly photographed book explores the Book of Kells through its historical background; a display of the elements of the book at their actual size; the spectacular openings of the texts that precede the Gospels; a study of earlier and comparable manuscripts; detailed examination of symbols and themes, with special enlarged details; a look at the scribes and artists who worked on the manuscript; and a consideration of technical aspects, illuminated by recent scientific research. The rich illustrations feature more than fifty full-size reproductions of complete pages of the manuscript plus enlarged details that allow one to relish the intricacy of elements barely visible to the naked eye. Supplementary images place the manuscript in its setting and provide comparisons for its iconography and style.

Fit Men Wanted: Original Posters from the Home Front
Eat Less Bread, Beer: A Necessity to the Strength of Britain, The Fight Is Now, Fit Men Wanted, Victory is in the Kitchen, We Need the Woman: such stirring messages exhorted British citizens to do their bit for the country 's war effort. Today they seem charmingly innocent, quintessentially English, and often very funny, and the posters that bear the slogans are a treasury of vintage graphics. Like the much-loved Keep Calm and Carry On poster, these proclamations are just what one needs to keep a stiff upper lip and a sense of humor in our own times.

Fire, Crime and Accident: Fire Departments, Police Stations, Rescue Services
Chris van Uffelen
,
2012
Architecture for rescue services has come a long way in the past decade. Buildings for the police, fire brigades and ambulance stations have lost their often purely functional and shed-like appearance and have begun to strive for recognition as an equitable architectural typology since Zaha Hadids trailblazing Vitra fire station in Weil am Rhein. This building type certainly is a challenge as there are numerous conditions to be taken into account in terms of functionality and especially security. The examples chosen for this title show an amazing diversity of emergency architecture. The buildings presented frequently house more than one institution, using the latest technology and communication techniques to successfully combine different functions under one roof. The projects included range from the rural two-bay ambulance depot to police headquarters and airport fire departments.

Hopper

Edward Hopper is as quintessentially American as Jackson Pollock or Andy Warhol. Like them, his imagery has reached far beyond the realm of art to impact on our culture in the broadest terms, so that we see early twentieth-century America «through» his work, as much as within it. The painter Charles Burchfield attributed Hopper's success to his «bold individualism, « declaring that in him we have...
