Flowers, Skulls, Contacts

What do flowers, skulls and contact sheets have in common? Not much you might think, but David Bailey begs to differ. This book combines Bailey's recent colour photographs of still-life flowers and skulls, with black and white contacts of his iconic celebrity portraiture and fashion work from the 1960s. One might analyze Bailey's combination of these bodies of work in light of the vanitas tradition, seeing it as a commentary on mortality and the passing of time. Indeed such a reading is tempting when comparing images of wilting roses with contacts of Brian Jones and John Lennon, both of whom appear confident in the prime of youth, unaware of the fates that will befall them. But perhaps this is too much, and Bailey himself would probably tell you so. For him, the flowers, skulls and contacts are simply different projects that he was working on simultaneously and decided to combine because he likes the idea of «eclectic collections». Enough said. »The winter in L.A. that year was kind of a 'grey July.' Diana and I lived at 234 Entrada Drive in January and February of 2001. These photographs are a memoir of what our eyes saw in our garden and when we walked to the Pacific Ocean. We also [rode] into the Santa Monica Mountains on our bicycles, crossing Sunset Boulevard just where it goes into Pacific Palisades. We did this every day, winding our way through more L.A. suburbia till we reached the fire trail into the mountains (where wilder animals than us live). We hardly ever saw a neighbor to make up stories about. Our landlady was called Denise de Graf. She was ever vigilant about our comings and goings. I also think we lived just to the north of the late Christopher Isherwood's house but maybe I dreamt that. That winter all we thought about was our work and getting back to Paris.» Подробнее

Stems

Friedlander Lee, 2011

In 1994, suffering from aching knees and painfully concerned about it, Lee Friedlander decided to prepare himself for a sedentary life. He began to pursue the still life as a possibility and maybe a way of photographic life a dramatic shift for a man who has spent his life photographing on the street, in the woods, on the road, at parties, anywhere but sitting down. He tried a variety of subjects with a few good results, but nothing stood out until he began to look at the fresh flowers that his wife Maria placed around their home in cut-glass vases. But never mind the flowers. True to Friedlander's style, he very quickly found himself most interested in the stems. During the months of February, May, June and December of 1994, he focused his lens on wild arrays of stems and the optical splendor produced by light refracting through the glass vases that contained them. In 1998, Friedlander had both of his knees surgically replaced. Three months of recovery time passed during which he took no pictures, the only gap in almost 50 years of working. The next year, successfully rehabilitated and walking without pain, Friedlander decided to re-apply himself to the stems and finish them off as a subject. Published in a lush, oversize volume, printed with a special drytrap process, Stems is the result of this unusual saga in the photographer's career. Elemental

Derges Susan, 2011

British artist Susan Derges engages with themes of alchemy, testing the inter-relation between the elements of fire, water, earth and air. Her beautifully crafted images reflect a holistic system that encompasses the human psyche and finds its metaphors through the natural world. From 1980-86 Derges lived and worked in Japan, introducing the influence of Japanese minimalism which she combined with her discovery of 'camera-less' photography techniques. Her first major series, Chladni Figures, was created by sprinkling powder onto photographic paper made to vibrate with sound, making visible the shapes of invisible sound waves. Subsequent series continued to explore hidden forces and cycles of nature and her most frequently recurring subject is water. She captures the interference patterns in flowing rivers, the energy of waterfalls and breaking waves and the states of water from ice to cloud, from the solid to the intangible. Derges often uses the landscape at night as her darkroom. She submerges large sheets of photographic paper in rivers and uses the moon and flashlight to create the exposure. These images can appear abstract from a distance yet highly descriptive when seen close up. They confound a sense of orientation, questioning what is above or below and implying a dialogue between the microcosm and the macrocosm, or matter and spirit. This book, edited by Martin Barnes, Senior Curator at the V&A, gathers together all of Derges' major series to date and the key texts about them. Drawing from twenty-five years of work, the chronological sequence is creatively rearranged by the artist and grouped according to the four elements and the transitions between them. Подробнее

Chris Killip: Seacoal

When I first saw the beach at Lynemouth in January 1976, I recognized the industry above it but nothing else I was seeing. The beach beneath me was full of activity with horses and carts backed into the sea. Men were standing in the sea next to the carts, using small wire nets attached to poles to fish out the coal from the water beneath them. The place confounded time; here the Middle Ages and the twentieth century intertwined. Chris Killip began photographing the people of Lynemouth seacoal beach in the north east of England in 1982, after nearly seven years of failed efforts to obtain their consent. During 1983 to 1984, he lived in a caravan on the seacoal camp, and documented the life, work and the struggle to survive on the beach, using his unflinching style of objective documentation. Fifty, of the one hundred and twenty four images published here, were first shown in 1984 at the Side Gallery in Newcastle and others were an important element of Killip's ground-breaking and legendary book In Flagrante, published four years later. Chris Killip, born on the Isle of Man in 1946, is a Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University where he has taught since 1991. His works are held in the permanent collections of, among others: Museum of Modern Art, New York; George Eastman House; Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; Museum Folkwang, Essen; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; and, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
