Luca Signorelli
Henry Tom
,
2009
Born in Cortona around 1450, Signorelli began his apprenticeship under Piero della Francesca before going on to study with the Florentine master Andrea del Verrocchio, in whose workshop Leonardo da Vinci, Sandro Botticelli, Domenica Ghirlandaio, Lorenzo de Credi and Pietro Perugino also learned their art. It was as Perugino's assistant that Signorelli realized his first known work, the Testament and Death of Moses in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, in 1482. Between that date and his death in 1523, Signorelli worked throughout central Italy for some of the greatest patrons of the age, earning himself a reputation as one of the leading painters of his generation. Recently restored, the extraordinary cycle of frescoes on the Last Judgemnt in the Cappella Nova at Orvieto, rightly considered Signorelli's finest masterpiece and a highpoint of the Italian Renaissance, reveal in all their force and glory the artist's skill as a colourist of the first rank and as a master of the male nude. Illustrated with stunning post-restoration colour plates, this book is the first in fifty years to re-evaluate Signorelli's importance and to catalogue his oeuvre. In a detailed life of the artist, Laurence Kanter traces his career from its origins in Piero's workshop to his late work in Tuscany and Umbria. In the catalogue, Tom Henry presents the artist's entire painted oeuvre, including a number of paintings never before reproduced, while in a separate plate section he discusses twenty-one of his most important works. Together these eminent contributions make up the most complete volume on Luca Signorelli ever published.

Travelling through the Eye of History
Schwartz Daniel
,
2010
Central Asia is the subject matter of this travelogue by a photographer working in the tradition of the great nineteenth-century explorers. The Silk Road, Transcaspia, the Pamir Highway, the Alai Corridor, the Khyber Pass, the Taklamakhan Desert: this is the magnificent terrain where the geopolitical ambitions of empires have played out. Central Asia is the largest natural fortress on earth, traversed by a few routes that have been used by traders and armies since earliest times and are still today the arteries for those in search of power, profit, or refuge. Warlords, border officials, businessmen, smugglers, and refugees are among those who populate the landscapes depicted here, from desert heartlands to zones of war and uneasy peace. 165 color photographs

Jargen Vollmer: On Filmsets and other Locations
Vollmer Jargen
,
2010
Jürgen Vollmer has lead the traditional peripatetic life of a photographer and this book contains images of the people he has photographed in different countries across the globe. What is different from the usual collection of travel portraits is that often his subjects have been famous actors and literary figures. The first part of the book, On Filmsets, consists of a series on two dozen American and a dozen French filmsets over the past four decades. The filmstars include among many others Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Sean Connery, Heath Ledger, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Jeanne Moreau. The portraits of directors include among others Francis Ford Coppola, Tony Scott, Roman Polanski, Barbra Streisand and Alain Resnais. Prominently featured are photos of Rudolf Nureyev, taken in 1966 during the filming of a ballet film. The second part of the book, On Other Locations, are photographs taken between 1961 and 1996, of local people in different countries, among them Turks, Sicilians, Egyptians and Senegalese as well as portraits of a few famous people, like John Lennon in Hamburg and William Burroughs in New York.

Glen Luchford
Luchford Glen
,
2010
British photographer Glen Luchford first caught the public eye in the late 1990s, with his avant-garde fashion campaigns for Prada. With its elaborate lighting and atmosphere of conspicuous artifice, Luchford's highly cinematic imagery exemplified the merging visual languages of fashion and art photography, launching the photographer as one of his generation's most imaginative talents. Part of Steidldangin's new British Influence series, this monograph presents 80 photographs from the past two decades, beginning with Luchford's earliest images, which prefigure the gritty, found-light aesthetic that defined the first half of the 1990s, from the quiet black-and-white portraits of musical icons such as Ian Brown, to more aggressive street shots of Kate Moss that catch the spirit of a seedy New York en route to gentrification. In later work, Luchford's from-the-hip naturalism gave way to an almost Hitchcockian style of portraiture. This monograph presents works in a range of media, from 35 mm black-and-white to 8 x 10, to digital formats, and features an interview with Luchford's long-time friend and artistic collaborator, painter Jenny Saville. From the very start of his career, Glen Luchford reinvigorated British fashion photography through his work for magazines such as i-D and The Face. He has shot campaigns for advertising clients such as Yves Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein and has exhibited with painter Jenny Saville. Luchford's work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Photographer's Gallery in London, and at The Museum of Modern Art in New York (as part of the 2004 exhibit Fashioning Fiction).

Robert Capa
Lacouture Jean

2010
Robert Capa (1913-1954) gave the world some of the most moving and memorable images of war ever taken, and redefined journalism for ever. Through his photographs we see the suffering, confusion, boredom and courage of the soldiers and civilians affected by the five wars that he covered. Yet he was more than a war photographer: Capa's portraits of politicians and artists are equally memorable. A participant, not an observer, Capa lived his life on the edge and died in action, killed by a landmine in Vietnam. 68 b&w photographs

Years of friendship 1956-1976
Molderings Herbert
,
2010
One was a famous artist and a pioneering photographer, the other an ardent collector of photography, a curator and author--known to his many friends as «Mr. Photokina» for his founding and curatorship of the legendary exhibitions at the Photokina photography fair in Cologne. Man Ray (1890-1976) and L. Fritz Gruber (1908-2005) nurtured a professional and personal friendship for more than 20 years, enjoying that particular closeness that can sometimes arise between artist and connoisseur. Gruber was closely involved in projects such as Man Ray's solo exhibition at Photokina and the book Man Ray Portraits, one of many now-collectable photography books Gruber edited. With an unsurpassed scholarly knowledge of Man Ray's work, over the course of several decades Gruber and his wife Renate put together the collection that is the basis of this book. (The collection itself now resides in Cologne's Ludwig Museum.) In addition to Man Ray's photographs, sculptural work and objects, the book includes extensive correspondence between Man Ray and Gruber and several essays on their association. Against this broadly-drawn backdrop, a moving personal picture emerges of the Grubers' diligent commitment to the work of this American artist. This volume provides many new insights on Man Ray, particularly within the final creative phase of his life.

Auguste Rodin: Drawings and Watercolors
Normand-Romain Antoinette
,
2010
»I have drawn all my life. I began withdrawing: I have never stopped drawing.»—Auguste Rodin From the «black» drawings contemporaneous with the Gates of Hell to his great watercolor nudes, this book reproduces hundreds of Auguste Rodin's most beautiful graphic works held in the collection of the Musée Rodin, a number of which are published here for the first time. The accompanying essays analyze the complex relationships between Rodin's drawings and his sculptures, the problems of attribution, and the role of sensuality in his work. Rodin's rich graphic oeuvre has until now been a little-known aspect of his art, yet it is crucial to a full understanding of his work. This book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the great sculptor's achievements. 372 illustrations in color and black-and-white

Gone?
Adams Robert
,
2010
»No one wants to be a prophet, if the job can be avoided. What you want to try to be is a psalmist.» Robert Adams Robert Adams began by photographing suburban landscapes along the edge of the Rocky Mountains. His goal was then, and remains, to acknowledge the disappearance of wilderness but also to discover a basis for affirmation. In the 1980s he went on to revisit semi-rural areas through which he had walked as a boy — landscapes no longer pristine but still notable for their quiet, space and light. The views in this book, none published before, record some of what he found compelling.

Realism in 20th Century Painting
Prendeville Brendan
,
2010
This comprehensive survey the history of realist painting and argues that realism has had a continuous yet restlessly changing place in American and European painting throughout the 20th century. Artists discussed include Eakins, Bellows and Homer, Vuillard, Bonnard, Schiele, Morandi, Hopper and Giacometti, through to Balthus, Lucian Freud, and David Hockney. The author provides the historical, artistic and critical contexts in which painting has taken a realist turn, from the Ashcan School to Soviet Social realism, from painting of the Existentialist era to the time of Photorealism, to recent developments. He argues that the western tradition of pictorial realism has in fact been renewed and modified through the diverse influences of modernism, political conflict and new visual technologies.

Donovan Wylie: Scrapbook
Prus Timothy
,
2010
For centuries, all over the world, scrapbooks have been the most immediate and popular form of visual diary. In Northern Ireland, scrapbooks from the late 1960s through the early 1990s reflected «The Troubles,» the regional conflict between Protestants and Catholics. Inspired by these highly individual collaged records of daily life--albums full of newspaper clippings, family photos and personal mementos--acclaimed Belfast-born photographer and filmmaker Donovan Wylie, in collaboration with cultural historian Timothy Prus, has created a non-sectarian version of these scrapbooks, with the benefit of hindsight, that recounts Wylie's own experience of growing up in Belfast in the 70s and 80s, as the son of a mixed marriage (his mother a Catholic, his father a Protestant), during a period when identification with one side of the religious divide was a presumed and sometimes deadly aspect of everyday life.

Iran by Inge Morath
Nafisi Azar
,
2010
In 1956, Inge Morath (1923-2002) traveled to the Middle East for Holiday magazine. She wore the traditional chador and traveled alone most of the time. «It was difficult to photograph there as a woman,» she later recorded. In this body of work, Morath's subjects range from politics and religion to work and commerce, from the shah's palace to the nomad's tent to Zoroaster's sacred shrine. She photographed Iran with the keen vision of an anthropologist, examining religious rituals, costuming, work, sport, music, art and theater in order to document «the continuity--or lack of it--between past and present,» as she later put it. Morath's work in Iran presaged her later work in Spain, China and Russia, creating an extensive document of the clash between modernity and tradition in the postwar Middle East. Retrospectively, Inge Morath: Iran recalls a land and a culture that have been profoundly transformed since the Iranian Revolution of 1979. It is a window into the past that provides a singular and timely perspective on Iran in the present.

Paul Gauguin: Artist of Myth and Dream
Eisenman Stephanie E.
,
2008
This is an exceptional monograph-catalogue revealing the innovative drive in Gauguin's work. This catalogue offers a unique opportunity to view Gauguin's entire artistic development from his early impressionist works to his final masterpieces painted on the Marquesas Islands where the artist went in search of an Arcadian kingdom of ecstasy, peace and art, far from the typical European struggle for money. In reality such a paradise on earth no longer existed, not even on the other side of the globe, however the wealth and complexity of life that he found before him there, inspired the creation of a series of works which are among the most vivid and durable in the history of painting.

Key Urban Housing of the Twentieth Century: Plans, Sections and Elevations (+ CD-ROM)

The design of multiple housing — a new building type, especially for growing urban populations — was a major new area of activity for architects at the beginning of the twentieth century, and one that continues into the twenty-first century. This book features 87 of the most influential modern housing designs of the last 100 years by some of the best-known architects in the field. Each project is explained with a concise text and photographs and specially created scale drawings, including floor plans and site plans, sections and elevations where appropriate.
