Beyond the Wall: The East German Collection of the Wende Museum
Jampol Justin
,
2014
Life behind the Iron Curtain: Art and artifacts from East Germany For 40 years, the Cold War dominated the world stage. East and West Germany stood at the frontlines of the global confrontation, symbolized by the infamous Berlin Wall, which separated friends, families, and countrymen. But while the world teetered on the edge, life went on in the communist East, as it did in the capitalist West. From the outside, it seemed that life behind the Iron Curtain was gray and dull, but beneath the surface of its faded buildings, it was filled with color, texture and deeply-held convictions. The Wende Museum in Los Angeles, California, named after the period of change following the destruction of the Berlin Wall, was created in 2002 to study the visual and material culture of the former Eastern Bloc. With physical and psychic distance from political trauma and personal attachment, it aims to foster multiple perspectives and interpretations of a pivotal and multilayered history that has continues to shape our world. To commemorate the Museum's 10-year anniversary, this unprecedented and encyclopedic volume features thousands of items from its extraordinary collections, including icons of East German design and political advertisement as well as everyday objects and images from a now-vanished world. Never before has a book included this full a spectrum of art, archives, and artifacts from socialist East Germany: official symbols and dissident expressions, the spectacular and the routine, the mass-produced and the handmade, the beautiful and the ugly, and the funny and the tragic. Accompanying the featured collections are illuminating and provocative texts from scholars and specialists from Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Canada, and the United States (Paul Betts, Andreas Ludwig, Josie McLellan, Katherine Pence, Eli Rubin, Jana Scholze, Joes Segal, Edith Sheffer, David Thomson), with themes ranging from the secret police to sexuality, space flight to flight across the border, and from monuments to mental-mapping.

Prisse d'Avennes: Egyptian Art
Ikram Salima
,
2014
Symmetry and opulence. Art and architecture of ancient Egypt. An ardent admirer of the superb skills of the ancient Egyptian and Oriental artisans, the French Orientalist, author, and artist Emile Prisse d'Avennes (1807-1879) made enormous contributions to the field of Egyptology. As a youth he dreamed of exploring the Orient, and at 19 began his travels, by visiting Greece, Palestine, and India. Over the next 40 years he travelled to Syria. Arabia, Persia, and lived for some time in Egypt and Algeria. Prisse d'Avennes explored Egypt disguised as an Arab, using the name Edris Effendi. A student of ancient Egyptian and Islamic cultures, he later wrote in his History of Egyptian Art: «I have selected the most elegant models, those whose shape gives a very exact idea of the taste and luxury of this period, when Egyptian artistry was at its most brilliant.» In 1844 Prisse d'Avennes travelled from Alexandria to France, where, three years later, he published Les Monuments egyptiens. The volume contains 51 plates — mainly chromolithographs, but also some color plates — based on drawings made during his years in Egypt. After again visiting North Africa, he returned to Paris in 1860 with the fruits of his numerous journeys — hundreds of folio drawings, photographs, sketches, plans, and 400 meters of bas-reliefs. Fascinated by the symmetry, complexity and opulence of Egyptian and Arabic art, he drew from his vast collection to create compilations of art and architecture, based on his study of original documents and historical, social, and religious context. His beautiful album of Egyptian art was published in its entirety in Paris in 1878 as L'Histoire de l'art egyptien containing 159 stunning plates. For this publication, these splendid illustrations of architecture, sculpture, paintings, and industrial arts, brilliantly conveying the history and variety of ancient Egypt's art and culture, are reproduced in facsimile and for the first time published together.

Kandinsky
Duchting Hajo
,
2000
The Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), who later lived in Germany and France, is one of the pioneers of 20th-century art. Nowadays he is regarded as the founder of abstract art and is, moreover, the chief theoretician of this type of painting. Together with Franz Marc and others he founded the group of artists known as the Blauer Reiter in Munich. His art then freed itself more and more from the object, eventually culminating in the First Abstract Watercolour of 1910. In his theoretical writings Kandinsky repeatedly sought the proximity of music; and just as in music, where the individual notes constitute the medium whose effect stems from harmony and euphony, Kandinsky was aiming for a pure concord of colour through the interplay of various shades. Gauguin had demanded that everything must be sacrificed to pure colours. Kandinsky was the first to realize this and thus to influence a whole range of artists.

Life
Home sweet home. This is a remarkable photographic exploration of life on earth. In the year 2000, world-renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting set out on a personal journey to photograph the evolution of life on earth. He made pilgrimages to true time capsules like a remote lagoon in Western Australia, spent time in research collections photographing forms of microscopic life, and even found ways to create visual parallels between the growth of organs in the human body and the patterns seen on the surface of the earth. The resulting volume is a glorious picture book of planet earth depicting the amazing biodiversity that surrounds us all. Lanting's true gift lies beyond his technical mastery: it is his eye for geometry in the beautiful chaos of nature that allows him to show us the world as it has never been seen before. From crabs to jellyfish, diatoms to vast geological formations, jungles to flowers, monkeys to human embryos, LIFE is a testament to the magical beauty of life in all its forms and is one of Lanting's most remarkable achievements.

The Art of Pin-up
Hanson Dian
,
2014
In the 15 years since TASCHEN published The Great American Pin-up, international interest in this distinctly American art form has increased exponentially. Paintings by leading artists such as Alberto Vargas, George Petty, and Gil Elvgren that sold for $ 2000 in 1996 are going for $ 200,000 and more today. Pin-up, defined as drawings or paintings of pretty girls that stop short of frank nudity, was produced between 1920 and 1970, and much of it was discarded by publishers and calendar companies after printing. Today it's huge, and ripe for an equally huge and truly comprehensive collector's edition. Formidably sized, The Art of Pin-up is an impressive book that will be coveted by casual fans as well as hardcore pin-up collectors. The reproduction quality of the paintings, pastels, and preparatory sketches — largely sourced from the original art — invites the viewer to trace the brush strokes in the full-page reproductions. Each chapter contains exquisite period calendars, vintage prints, and original model photos as well, documenting the artists' creative process. Much of these ephemera were photographed on-site at the historic Brown & Bigelow Company, home to the world's largest archive of vintage pin-up calendars. Following the chapters on the 15 featured artists, the book concludes with an Encyclopedia of Pin-up, featuring thumbnail bios and representative art of 72 additional artists, the most complete compendium of pin-up artists ever compiled. All this adds up to a book unlikely to be equaled on this popular subject.

Velazquez: The Complete Works
Jose Lopez-Rey
,
2014
Life is but a dream: The complete works of the visionary painter Manet called him the greatest painter of all. Picasso was so inspired by hismasterpiece Las Meninas that he painted 44 variations of it. Monet, Renoir, and Degas were heavily influenced by the paintings of Philip IV's grand chamberlain. Francis Bacon famously painted a study of his portrait of Pope Innocent X. Indeed, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velazquez (1599-1660) was more than the most important painter of the Spanish Golden Age — he was considered a precursor to the Impressionists over two centuries before that movement came into being. This catalog raisonne brings together Velazquez's complete works — jaw-droppingly reproduced in extra-large format with a selection of delicious enlarged details — with insightful commentary on how his paintings give equal attention to all that they contain. To him, an old woman frying eggs or a buffoon was as important as a Pope or a King. For him, form was subservient to light and color; the brushstrokes were markers to help the viewers reconstruct each picture mentally — concepts adopted vehemently by the Impressionists. Velazquez's greatest talent was creating beauty from the grotesque, imbuing each subject with a human liveliness rarely seen on canvas. In its extensive detail and comparisons, Jose Lopez-Rey's book reveals the development of this vision. Things are or are not, they exist or vanish, in the same way that Calderon felt that life was like a dream. In the work of Velazquez, the language is everything. Thanks to the joint initiative of TASCHEN and Wildenstein, this exceptional publication features new photography of recently restored paintings, published here for the first time.

Roman Art
Siebler Michael
,
2007
For a long time, Roman art was somewhat overshadowed by the art of ancient Greece. It was only in about 1900 that a search began for ancient Roman art and architecture. The foundations of Roman imagery were laid in the early days of the Empire under Emperor Augustus. The imperial court and the imperial family were role models for artistic style, taste and fashion — trendsetters, so to speak, which imperial society was obliged to follow. It was at court that the new took shape, pieced together from the vocabulary of Greek originals, copies and imitations as well as new creations, but fulfilling entirely new functions and expressing new meanings. The portrait of the ruler and the so-called state reliefs, which enhanced and embroidered real events, by depicting gods for example, had a particular influence in the shaping of the imagery. Using classical stylistic means, Roman art was able to fulfill all the desires and ideas of its patrons for more than two centuries. Featured works include: Augustus of Primaporta; Gemma Augustea; Lycurgus beaker; funerary relief of the Roman couple Publius Aiedius and Publia Aiedia; Constantine I in a helmet with the christogram; the portrait of a man, the so-called Brutus; equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius; colossal portrait of Emperor Constantine I; group statue of the Emperors Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius and Constantine I, the tetrarch group; personifications of Macedonia and Persia. Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period; and a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a reference work, portrait of the artist, and/or citations.

Romanesque
Reaching its peak in the 11th and 12th centuries, the Romanesque movement was marked by a peculiar, vivid, and often monumental expressiveness in architecture and fine arts. The main centres were located in Italy, France, the German-language countries, Spain, and England, though the voices of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe expressed themselves distinctly in the genre, which patterned itself on antique and Byzantine art. Despite untold losses, countless Romanesque masterpieces remain preserved today. Highlights include: Frescoes in Galliano near Cantu, Sant'Angelo in Formis, Saint Chef, Saint-Savin-sur Gartempe, Lambach, S. Pietro al Monte near Civate, S. Clemente in Rome, from S. Maria de Tahull, Berze-la-Ville, Tavant, Panteon de los Reyes in Leon, Castel Appiano, from Sigena; the golden Altar-Piece from Lisbjerg; the Bayeux Tapestry; stained glasses in the Cathedral of Augsburg and Le Mans, mosaics in S. Clemete, Rome, and in S. Marco, Venice; coloured panels und crosses from La Seo de Urgel, Sarzana and the panted ceiling in St. Michael, Hildesheim; sculptures in Souillac, Autun, Santiago de Compostela; and examples of metalwork, of manuscripts and enamels. Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period, and a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a reference work, portrait of the artist, and/or citations.

The Decisive Moment
Henri Cartier-Bresson
,
2014
The Decisive Moment originally titled Images a la Sauvette — is one of the most famous books in the history of photography, assembling Cartier-Bresson's best work from his early years. Published in 1952 by Simon and Schuster, New York, in collaboration with Editions Verve, Paris, it was lavishly embellished with a collage cover by Henri Matisse. The book and its images have since influenced generations of photographers. Its English title has defined the notion of the famous formal peak in which all elements in the photographic frame accumulate to form the perfect image. Paired with the artist's humanist viewpoint, Cartier-Bresson's photography has become part of the world's collective memory. This new publication is a meticulous facsimile of the original book. It comes with an additional booklet containing an essay on the history of The Decisive Moment by Centre Pompidou curator Clement Cheroux.

Fullmoon
Hans Werner Holzwarth
,
2015
Poetic nightscapes: Darren Almond's nocturnal nature series In Full Moon, the conceptual meets the poetic: British artist Darren Almond catches natural archetypes and silent landscapes in night photographs made under a full moon, with the shutter kept open for over a quarter of an hour. The long exposure time illuminates the landscape almost like daybreak, but the atmosphere is different. There is a mild glow emanating even from the shadows, star-lines cross the sky, and water blankets the earth like a misty froth. The enhanced moonlight infuses the pictures with a haunted quality, casting the landscapes in an unease that is wholly of our time, as a contemporary notion of the sublime. The work is about time, both in its contemplation of timeless qualities in the landscape and of photography as a medium to record its passage. The book collects roughly 250 images which Almond captured following the full moon around the globe. Natural monuments like Yosemite National Park or the German Isle of Rugen draw links to Romantic paintings, from Albert Bierstadt and Caspar David Friedrich respectively, and the whole series circles around the possibility of Romantic themes today: majestic American mountains, austere Arctic ice fields, picturesque rocks by the seascape in Japan, or, most intimately viewed, the nature of Britain, whose painterly subjects are closest to home. This book covers the complete series started at the turn of the century and continuing today in full-page illustrations, the thoughts and references elucidated in essays on the role of photography in our media-saturated times and on the memories within the landscape that become visible in Almond's work. Also available in three Art Editions, all numbered and signed by the artist.

In Color
Davidson Bruce
,
2014
This volume presents Bruce Davidson's personal selections from his lesser-known color archive. Ranging from a period of fifty-six years and counting, these images are representative of the photographers color career. Assignments from various magazines (Vogue, National Geographic, Life magazine) and commercial projects led him to photograph fashion (early 1960s), the Shah of Iran with his family (1964), keepers of French monuments (1988), the supermodel Kylie Bax (1997), and college cheerleaders (1989). He photographed in India and China, but also at home in New York, in Chicago, and along the Pacific Coast Highway. In 1968, Michelangelo Antonioni invited him to document the making of his film Zabriskie Point. Davidson also continued to pursue personal projects, e.g. photographing the Yiddish writer and Nobel Prize laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer (197275), the New York City subway (1980), and Katzs Delicatessen (2004). Often staying on in a country after an official assignment, he documented Welsh coalfields, family holidays in Martha's Vineyard, and travelled through Patagonia and Mexico.

Howard Greenberg Collection
Sire Agnes
,
2014
Howard Greenberg has been a gallery owner for more than thirty years. He is nowadays considered one of the pillars of the New York photographic scene. While he is well known as a dealer, his rather private passion as a collector is now revealed for the first time to a larger public. The Howard Greenberg Collection — which has been carefully assembled over the last thirty years — counts around 500 photographs that distinguish themselves by their high print quality. The unique collection reflects Howard Greenberg's diverse fields of interest that range from the modern esthetic approach of the 1920s and 1930s with the works of Edward Steichen, Edward Weston or the Czech School to contemporary photographers such as Minor White, Harry Callahan and Robert Frank. A large part of the collection is dedicated to the humanist photography genre, represented — among others — by Lewis Hine, David Seymour and Farm Security Administration photographers like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, witnesses of the Great Depression of the 1930s. More than anything the collection illustrates New York's enormous influence on the history of photography in the 20th century: architecture and urban life are reflected in the photographs of Berenice Abbott, Weegee and Lee Friedlander.

Impressionism
This monograph covers the full scope of Impressionist painting. The first part outlines the history of Impressionism in France, addressing not only the work of the acknowledged masters, but also that of such unjustly neglected artists as Frederic Bazille, Gustave Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot or Lucien Pissarro. The second part examines the Impressionist movements that emerged in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern and South-East Europe, Italy, Spain, Britain and North America. A 64-page Directory of Impressionism is appended, containing bibliographies, portraits and biographical data on all 236 artists.
