The Highland Clans The Highland clans of Scotland are famous, the names celebrated, and the deeds heroic. Having clung to ancient traditions of family, loyalty, and valor for centuries, the clans met the beginning of their end at the fateful battle at Culloden in 1746. The great emigrations to North America and elsewhere began, and clansmen and women disappeared into the streets of the world's cities. Alistair Moffat traces the history of the clans from their Celtic origins to the coming of the Romans; from Somerled the Viking to Robert the Bruce; from the great battles of Bannockburn and Flodden to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Risings; and from the Clearances to the present day. These are the stories of great leaders and famous battles. They are also the stories of an extraordinary people, shaped by the unique traditions and landscape of the Highlands of Scotland. Moffat is an adept guide to the world of the clans, a world dominated by lineage, land, and community. Names were crucially important in this world: more than mere labels, names were also addresses, linking people to the map of northern Scotland. Even today the power of the ancient clan names persists, drawing many of the children of the scattered diaspora back to this rugged corner of the world. Special features include a clan map and a list of clan names. Подробнее

Lucien Lelong The first book devoted to this influential twentieth-century French couturier. Lucien Lelong was a central figure in French fashion from the 1920s to the 1950s, and his designs were in many ways precursors of contemporary fashion shapes and developments. Noted for his skill, exquisite workmanship, and beautiful fabrics, Lelong and his house promoted a fluid, minimalist, elegant look. Lelong blended modern design with a strong business sense and was influential for both his fashions and his entrepreneurship. He was one of the earliest designers to diversify into lingerie, accessories, and perfumes, and in 1934 he introduced a luxury ready-to-wear line. During the Occupation in World War II, he was instrumental in persuading the Germans to allow French couture houses to remain in Paris rather than moving to Berlin. This wonderfully illustrated history of Lelong and his house chronicles the period and its leading personalities, artists, and designers. Lelong's clients included Colette, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, and Rose Kennedy; Balmain, Dior, and Givenchy apprenticed with him; and Horst, Beaton, Hoyningen Huene, Man Ray, and Lee Miller photographed his models. 134 illustrations, 48 in color. Each photograph is in itself a masterpiece of dramatic form; taken together, Cartier-Bresson's works constitute a personal history of epic scope. New Bar and Club Design: A Century of Surface Design
, 2009
This title now comes in paperback. As the sequel to the highly successful Bar and Club Design, this volume examines current international trends, showcasing 47 bars and clubs. The resurgence of cocktail culture and the explosion of the 'style bar' — places that are professionally designed and serve high quality spirits, wines and cocktails — continues in cities such as New York, London and Tokyo but also Beirut and Kuala Lumpur. There is also a trend in lower budget designer bars that are as visually interesting as the big budget productions — such as Andy Wahloo in Paris and Opal in London. Likewise club culture continues to thrive. Nightclubs have grown cosier and cater to the 'grown-up clubber' offering comfort and luxury rather than an empty shell in which to dance. 'Superclubs' now have the very best in technology and audiovisual entertainment, like Avalon in New York and CocoonClub in Frankfurt. Подробнее

Self-portrait Photography Self Portraiture has long been one of the most important genres in fine art, and as photographers like Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin demonstrate, offers unique possibilities for the creative photographer, too. The digital age and in particular, the photosharing site flickr has opened up the field, throwing up a generation of talents who, in presenting images of themselves to the world, offer new ways of seeing oneself. Foremost among these is Natalie Miss Aniela Dybisz. In Self-Portrait Photography, the only book of its kind, she offers a wealth of practical expertise and conceptual finesse. Her startlingly original work is deconstructed: she offers step by step worked examples of how unique effects were achieved, and other leading photographers in the genre profile themselves and their work too, all adding up to introducing a wealth of inspirational and technical ideas for todays digital photographer. Photographers at all levels will be inspired to take another look at the model closest to hand themselves. Подробнее
