Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses
Klanten
,
2005
Innovative graphic identities for small, creative companies. Today, many young people who have studied or trained in creative fields would rather work with their hands or have direct contact with their clients than sit at a desk in a large design office. These creatives are founding their own small companies all over the world--storefronts and other locations with a uniquely individual character that often serve simultaneously as an office, workshop, warehouse, and local meeting point for like-minded people. Whether florists, butchers, or yoga studios, these small businesses need a customized visual identity that can adequately capture and represent their particular dynamic. Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses is a compilation of intelligent corporate designs for small, creative companies. The book Showcases innovative work that captures the imagination with which their founders pursue and communicate their business concepts. The featured examples reflect the full spectrum of today's most important design trends--from minimalism and classic modernism to styles that range from retro and letter-press-nostalgic to playful and surreal. All of the included work makes clear that intriguing visual concepts do not depend on a large budget. It is a testament to the fact that certain limitations can be beneficial to coming up with original and effectively executed creative ideas. The selection of projects in Introducing: Visual Identities for Small Businesses is neither limited to a certain branch of business, nor to particular media. The diverse examples include a small run of pastel-colored stationary for a nursery, the hand-set business cards of a typographer, as well as the shop design and chalk-written price list of a small-town pastry shop. What thematically unites the work in the book is the fresh attitude and the personal, proactive approach of the founders on which it is based.

2012
Today, luxury travel is having time for exceptional places and unparalleled experiences. The world has become smaller. Today, travel is simple, affordable, and no longer a true luxury. But there are still extraordinary places to discover and experiences to be had. The promise of special moments makes one want to take a journey--whether the budget is large or small. XOOOOX
XOOOOX
,
2012
The first monograph on Germany's most popular street artist. xoooox was the first German street artist to come to prominence on the international art market. His prints have been shown in numerous international exhibitions and sold at auction. This book is xoooox's first monograph. It focuses mainly on his portraits of female models that he prefers to stencil or wheat-paste onto surfaces of older buildings scarred by the passage of time. The contrast between the strikingly beautiful women and the crumbling walls is a fundamental aspect of his creative vision. Other work featured in xoooox is a clever critique of consumer culture. For example, the artist reinterprets logos of brands such as Hermés or Chanel to make people aware of how easily dazzled they can be by the superficial promise of luxury. Or he morphs an H&M logo into the letters HIV as a statement against the leveling effect of global clothing brands that are spreading around the world like a virus. The documentation of xoooox's work on the street is complemented by photographs of select exhibitions and of the artist at work. The book is edited by Benjamin Wolbergs, an author and photographer who specializes in subjects related to urban art.

Arabesque 2: Graphic Design from the Arab World and Persia (+ CD-ROM)
Wittner Ben
,
2011
Cutting-edge graphic work from the Arab world and Iran that is emblematic of the cultural emancipation of this entire area. The wave of protests that started this year in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, and other countries have made it clear just how much the Middle East is searching for a new identity. Young designers in the region are playing a part in this movement by increasingly emancipating themselves creatively. In their work, they are charting their own compelling course between local visual convention and a modern international style. Arabesque 2 documents the potential of this current creative emancipation in the Arab world and Iran. The book features examples of recent innovative and groundbreaking design work that is inspired by the richness of the region's visual culture. Given the important role of calligraphy in the Middle East, Arabesque 2 focuses on typography. The book presents a wide range of Arabic fonts and typefaces inspired by traditional calligraphy. These are accompanied by a rich selection of applications. Select examples of design and graffiti serve as powerful demonstrations of how text can be used illustratively. This work is particularly relevant to those creating street art and poster design. Arabesque 2 also features graphic design, logos, editorial design, and illustration by young designers and activists from Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. Regardless of the location and nationality of their creators, all of the examples included in the book combine modern design with the traditional, letter-based canon of Arab forms in striking ways. The book's preface is written by John Martin, co-founder of Art Dubai. Additional texts and interviews describe the environments in which the featured designers and artists work. Editors Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma round out Arabesque 2 with a CD-ROM that features four typefaces related to its themes.

Utopia Forever: Visions of Architecture and Urbanism
Klanten Robert
,
2011
The cities in which we live today are unfortunately not the cities that we need for a humane and sustainable tomorrow. Societies and politicians are desperately looking for solutions and ideas for the urban areas of the future. That is why the development and discussion of utopias are next to sustainability the most current topics in contemporary architecture. We have learned from the 1960s and 1970s that utopian visions are one of the most important catalysts for fundamental change. Modern wind farms for generating energy, for example, were initially contemplated at that time and are now permanent fixtures in our landscapes. Utopia Forever is a collection of current projects and concepts from architecture, city planning, urbanism, and art that point beyond the restrictions of the factual to unleash the potential of creative visions. In contrast to the largely ideal-theoretic approaches of the past, today s utopias take the necessity for societal changes into account. The projects in this book explore how current challenges for architecture, mobility, and energy as well as the logistics of food consumption and waste removal can be met. Whether created by established architects and artists or new talents, the projects in Utopia Forever are radically shaping our notions of life in the future.

The Velvet Hammer Burlesque
Carr Michelle
,
2008
The Velvet Hammer Burlesque has put the tease back into striptease. Based in Los Angeles and founded by Michelle Carr, the infamous troupe kick-started the current era of Neo-Burlesque and has caused a furore on stages worldwide. The Velvet Hammer's shows are a potent cocktail that mixes elements from classical American revues with a post-feminist punk rock attitude. Their intricately choreographed and lovingly costumed performances have much more in common with the tradition of Vaudeville than with the sleazy table dancing of today. The book The Velvet Hammer Burlesque presents photographs of the group's voluptuous ensemble of dancers and performers from their savvy on-stage acts to a glimpse behind the curtain. Beautiful women of all shapes and sizes, most of them don't correspond to today's generally accepted, often surgically enhanced ideal. But they all radiate an authentic, raw energy in their routines that mesmerizes the audience until (almost) the last shred of clothing is stripped away. Every page of The Velvet Hammer Burlesque serves up true American beauty consisting of shapely curves, tattoos, tassels and lace, and fuelled by a passion for booze, smoke, rock 'n' roll and the wilder side of life.

Taxing Art: When Objects Travel
Tank Beta
,
2007
In recent years, the boundaries between art and design have become more and more blurred. Today, it is not the object itself, but rather its economic functionality that determines its categorization. Astonishingly, it is often customs officials who subjectively decide what constitutes art and design based on their personal views and erratic local tax laws. Against this background, Taxing Art is a buoyantly ironic, clever case study and analysis of the effect of traditional, bureaucratic procedures on innovative work. This revealing illustrated essay puts the spotlight on the largely underestimated effect that tax laws have on where design ends and art begins.

German Fashion Design 1946-2012
Barth Nadine
,
2011
In the mid-1980s, people began to speak about German fashion designers. At this time, fashion shows with plenty of press hype and international flair took place at the Düsseldorf Fair. The old labels no longer exist; Wolfgang Joop now does Wunderkind, the Igedo fair is called CPD, and instead of traveling to the Munich Fashion Week, you go to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin. But the scene’s self-confidence grew. Full of verve, its aim was to advance awareness for the history of fashion made in Germany, which had begun around 1900 with the studios near Berlin’s Hausvogteiplatz and reached a glamorous zenith with the post-war designers Heinz Oestergaard and Uli Richter.
