Charles Latham's Gardens of Italy: From the Archives of Country Life Bearing testament to the rich heritage of some of Italy’s greatest gardens in the golden age before World War I, this stunning compilation is a pictorial preservation of these magnificent Renaissance and Baroque gardens from 1903 onwards. Presented in intricate detail, these exceptional photographs of aristocratic gardens—fallen into a state of picturesque decrepitude as a result of the political turmoil that overtook Italy in the 19th century—highlight the elaborate architecture, statuary, and ingenious waterworks favored by Renaissance architects, and are brilliantly captured in all their faded magnificence. Accompanied by incisive commentary by a leading authority on garden history, this beautiful historical photographic documentation is an essential resource for garden, architecture, and history enthusiasts alike. The Book of the Edwardian and Interwar House More than one million houses were built in Britain during the Edwardian period and another four million in the years between the two World Wars; most of these are still in use as homes today. This book explains to current owners of such houses why and by whom their structures were built; how the original occupants would have decorated, furnished, and used them; and the development of the distinctive architectural styles of the time. The leading architects of the Edwardian period were enthusiasts for a return to English vernacular styles, in contrast to what they considered the dry rigidities of classicism and the extravaganzas of the Gothic revival, while also being obliged for the first time to address the changes necessary to incorporate innovations such as modern sanitation, bathing facilities, and the use of electricity into their designs. The first half of the book looks at the styles that these men created for showpiece developments and the way in which their designs were copied by speculative builders and adapted for the first council houses. There are also chapters on the gardens of the period. In the second half, individual chapters are devoted to the various elements of the house—fireplaces and chimneys, doors and windows, kitchens, bathrooms, staircases, and more—including the methods and materials used in their construction and the decorative styles and materials fashionable at the time. The Country Houses of John Vanbrugh: From the Archives of Country Life The country houses designed by Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) are some of the most original and memorable works of architecture in Britain. He was rightly judged ‘The Shakespeare of architects’ by Sir John Soane, and was the designer of Castle Howard in Yorkshire and Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, two of the great iconic houses of Britain. Vanbrugh’s life was almost as remarkable as his houses. The son of a merchant of Dutch extraction, his grandfather had left Haarlem to avoid religious persecution as a protestant; his mother was related to many of the great landed families of the day. Before turning his attentions to architecture in 1699, he worked as a merchant, travelling to India in the service of the East India Company; served as an army officer; was arrested and imprisoned on suspicion of being a spy, and, as a playwright, wrote and produced successful comedies such as The Relapse. Accompanied by well-researched, fascinating accounts of his great houses and their landscapes, Jeremy Musson’s book brings together 200 of the finest photographs of his country houses, taken for Country Life magazine over the last century. Complete with an introductory biography of Vanbrugh’s remarkable life and character, The Country Houses of John Vanbrugh is a truly comprehensive work that will delight admirers of this great all-rounder of the Augustan age. The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti Since its genesis on the East Coast of the United States in the late 1960s, street art has travelled to nearly every corner of the globe, morphing into highly ornate and vibrant new styles. From Steve Powers (Espo) in New York to Kid Zoom in Australia, taking in Banksy’s London, Paris as transfigured by Honet and OX, and the gargantuan murals of the Brazilian twins ‘Os Gêmeos’, The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti is the first truly geographical history of the form. Featuring specially commissioned works from major graffiti and street art practitioners, The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti offers the reader an insider’s view of the urban landscape as the artists themselves experience it. This beautifully illustrated book, produced with the help of many of the artists it features, dispels the idea of such art as a thoughtless defacement of pristine surfaces, and instead celebrates it as a contemporary and highly creative inscription upon the skin of the built environment. Organized geographically, by continent and by city – from New York, Los Angeles and Montreal in North America, through Mexico City and Buenos Aires in Latin America, to London, Berlin and Madrid in Europe, as well as Sydney and Tokyo in the Pacific – it profiles more than 100 of today’s most important artists and features over 700 astonishing artworks. Metallica: The Complete Illustrated History Formed in Los Angeles in 1981, Metallica has become the single bestselling heavy metal act in music history, with more than 100 million album sales to its credit. Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, the band remains hugely popular worldwide: in 2009, Metallica's 1991 self-titled LP became the bestselling album of the SoundScan era. In this book, the first complete illustrated treatment of the band, acclaimed heavy metal journalist Martin Popoff leads a roster of respected heavy metal writers to take on Metallica's entire history, analyzing each of the group's ten studio albums (including 2011's LuLu collaboration with Lou Reed) and providing a complete discography. More than 300 images complement extensive band stories: their formative years spent woodshedding in the clubs of Los Angeles, tragedies like the death of founding bassist Cliff Burton, the triumphs of multiple platinum recordings, personnel changes like the departures of Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted, and tours covering the world over. Live-performance and candid off-stage photographs are accompanied by a stunning selection of memorabilia, including gig posters, concert tees, picture sleeves, backstage passes, buttons, ticket stubs, and more. By following the same critically acclaimed, high-quality format as Voyageur Press' previous books on Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Queen, Iron Maiden, and others, Metallica: The Complete Illustrated History is the authoritative tribute to one of history's most successful and admired heavy metal bands. Fifth Avenue, 5 A: M. : Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's Before Breakfast at Tiffany’s Audrey Hepburn was still a little-known actress with few film roles to speak of; after it – indeed, because of it — she was one of the world’s most famous fashion, style and screen icons. It was this film that matched her with Hubert de Givenchy’s “little black dress”. Meanwhile, Truman Capote’s original novel is itself a modern classic selling huge numbers every year, and its high-living author of perennial interest. Now, this little book tells the story of how it all happened: how Audrey got the role (for which at first she wasn’t considered, and which she at first didn’t want); how long it took to get the script right; how it made Blake Edwards’ name as a director after too many trashy films had failed to; and how Henry Mancini’s soundtrack with its memorable signature tune ‘Moon River’ completed the irresistible package. This is the story of how one shy, uncertain, inexperienced young actress was persuaded to take on a role she at first thought too hard-edged and amoral – and how it made Audrey Hepburn into gamine, elusive Holly Golightly in the little black dress — and a star for the rest of her life. Audrey the 60s
, 2012
Audrey Hepburn charmed cinema audiences in the 1950s as a new type of screen presence — gamine, doe-eyed and refreshingly casual. By the 1960s she had metamorphosed to become a trendsetting sophisticate, achieving unrivalled status as an actress, model, movie star and champion for underprivileged children worldwide. Curator and archivist David Wills has amassed one of the world's largest private collections of original Audrey Hepburn photography. Now, in Audrey: The 60s, he has gathered a spectacular selection of work from her key photographers — much of it digitally restored from original negatives and transparencies — to create a truly breath-taking portfolio of images which pays homage to the most beloved and enduring style icon of the decade that changed everything. Among the highlights are: Never-before-seen on-set photography from some of Audrey Hepburn's most cherished movies, including Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, My Fair Lady, How to Steal a Million and Two for the Road; Outtakes and rare images from fashion shoots, some not seen since their original appearance in Vogue; Previously unpublished work by photographers Bert Stern, Cecil Beaton, Douglas Kirkland, William Klein, Howell Conant, Bob Willoughby, Pierluigi Praturlon and many others. Pairing over two hundred stunning images with reflections and recollections from friends, photographers, designers, close collaborators and Hepburn herself, Audrey: The 60s is an unforgettable showcase of the actress's timeless beauty and extraordinarily influential style. Audrey Style Audrey Hepburn was one of the most admired and emulated women of the twentieth century, and has become a timeless style icon. But her beauty was more than skin deep and for the first time, this style biography reveals the details made up her appeal. Drawing on original interviews with luminaries such as Hubert de Givenchy and Gregory Peck, and featuring memories of the star from the likes of Steven Spielberg and Ralph Lauren, Keogh's gorgeous book brings the real Audrey to life. With more than ninety colour and black and white photos, many of which have never been published before, as well as original designer sketches from Vera Wang, Monolo Blahnik and Alexander McQueen, Audrey Style gives measure to the grace, humour, intelligence and, of course, inimitable fashion finesse that was Audrey Hepburn. Linguists have traditionally been coy about the subject of swearing; so much so that two of the most frequently used four-letter words in the English language have only recently found their way into standard dictionaries. But Ruth Wajnrb approaches the subject head on, challenging her readers to set shocks and sniggers aside and to examine it like any other kind of communication. The result is a fascinating, and often very funny, book that will quickly persuade her readers that bad language is possibly even more interesting than good. We use swear-words in a whole range of contexts, not just to abuse others, but to express irritation, surprise, even affection, or simply to intensify an otherwise commonplace observation. Historically, as one expression has lost its taboo quality it has been replaced by others and this is a continuing process; blasphemy, for example, has largely lost its power to shock over the past century, and the lexicon of swearing is now reduced to core of about a dozen 'taboo' words of which two, 'fuck' and 'shit', have proved to be almost infinitely adaptable, both grammatically and semantically. KISS: Behind the Mask
, 2005
With its combination of cartoonish monster-movie makeup and oversized costumes, ear-splitting amplification and gleeful songs in praise of sex, heavy metal rock legend Kiss has never been accused of not being excessive, and this book is a great example of why it is still a multimillion-dollar profit-making machine. While this book covers much of the same biographical territory as Gene Simmons's Kiss and Make-Up and Kisstory (the band's self-published 440-page coffee-table-sized tome), the authorized bio presents more than enough new material to make it essential for hardcore fans. Much of the book's first half presents a previously unpublished work based on the only in-depth interviews the band gave in 1980. The result is a remarkably humanizing look behind the heavy metal tomfoolery, with Simmons more honestly discussing his Jewish upbringing than he does in his autobiography, and the rest of the band disarmingly admitting to borrowing from the glam-rocker New York Dolls as well as the Harlem Globetrotters. The book's second half, however, is the true highlight for Kiss fans: a comprehensive look at all of the Kiss albums ever made. Among the surprises is the praise of noted producer Eddie Kramer, a close associate of Jimi Hendrix, for the band's no-nonsense work ethic. Of note are Kiss's hilariously guileless quotes, such as the admission that another producer «made a point of trying to get us to stop writing songs about getting laid, which was valid. But he needed to understand that's all we ever did.» Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. Подробнее
