The Many Faces of Jonathan Yeo Jonathan Yeo is one of Britains best-known portrait painters. Over more than a decade, he has gained an international reputation for painting some of the most famous faces of our age. Models and movie stars, artists and actors, politicians and princes all have been the subject of his iconic, and often ironic, portraits. Nicole Kidman, Dennis Hopper, Kevin Spacey, Stephen Fry, Damien Hirst, Sienna Miller, Rupert Murdoch, Grayson Perry, Tony Blair and Prince Philip are just a selection of the many household names who have sat for Yeo. Renowned for his distinctive, highly figurative canvases and controversial collages, he employs a range of media and techniques to create a diverse body of work that expands the traditions of portraiture while examining contemporary perceptions of beauty, celebrity and power. Coinciding with a retrospective exhibition at Londons National Portrait Gallery, The Many Faces of Jonathan Yeo is the first major publication on the artist. Featuring his most popular paintings, drawings, collages and prints, the book also presents several new canvases made especially for the show. Alongside his intimate portraits of well-known sitters are dramatic and unsettling studies of cosmetic-surgery patients that document the compulsive and painful pursuit of physical perfection. Dozens of studio shots and photographs of works in progress reveal Yeos working practice and chart the process of creating individual portraits. Numerous contributions from his subjects lift the lid on what it is like to be scrutinized by the artists exacting, forensic eye and to have oneself captured on canvas for ever. Martin Gayford discusses Yeos work within the history of society portraiture, while a wide-ranging interview between the artist and Sarah Howgate, curator of the National Portrait Gallery show considers why in our image-saturated world of instant celebrity, the slowly hand-crafted portrait matters more than ever. Not just a monograph on a single artist, this book is also an enlightening exploration of the state of portraiture today and gives an insight into the risks faced by both portraitist and sitter. Barcelona Sculptures
, 2005
Spain's second largest city, Barcelona, may be famous for its architecture and its history, but in amongst those Romanesque churches, winding Gothic streets, and Gaudi apartment buildings lurk a museum full of permanent outdoor sculptures. More than 50 of the most noteworthy of these 20th-century public artworks are reproduced here, including pieces by Roy Lichtenstein, Alexander Calder, Richard Serra, Antoni Tapies, Frank Gehry, Ellsworth Kelly, Lawrence Weiner, Rebecca Horn, Joan Miro, Claes Oldenburg, Juan Munoz, Anthony Caro, and James Turrell. Though it enjoyed an illustrious past as a Roman colony, Visigoth capital, and 14th-century martitime power, Barcelona Sculptures vividly proves that the capital of the Catalonia region is firmly ensconced in the modern world, especially the modern art world. XXSmall Houses (English, German, Spanish, French) If less is more, then smaller is better. if architecture could be reduced to a simple equation, then this one would sum up the thesis of this book. The new houses presented here, all no larger than 100 qm (1000 sf), show that limited space and budget generate especially creative living solutions. By exploring new directions, such as sustainable, green building methods and prefabricated construction technology, these houses show that there really is an alternative to the dreary suburban homes which dominate real estate markets worldwide. El Greco El Greco (born Domenicos Theotocopoulos, 1541-1614) was born on the Greek island of Crete, then a Venetian colony, and went as a youth to Venice, where he began by painting icons in the Byzantine style for the Greek community there. He soon succumbed to the powerful influences of Titian, Tintoretto and, later, Michelangelo. In 1576, El Greco went to Spain, settling in Toledo, where he spent the rest of his life--producing the depictions of the Toledan landscape that are justly among his best-loved works. El Greco's art aimed to arouse religious fervor in its viewers: consequently his brushwork is ecstatically free, color is used expressively and figures are elongated to maximum tension by their emphatic gestures. His work brings a great age of Christian art to its close. With 108 full-color illustrations, including all of his best-known and most characteristic works, this volume offers the reader a wide overview of the work of one of the world's most innovative painters.
