Suffolk Artists of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century A companion volume to Josephine Walpole's Art and Artists of the Norwich School , although, of course, the artists of Suffolk never banded themselves into a group or 'school'. They were linked more by subject matter — landscape; there were some portrait painters and painters of genre pictures and flowers, but in the main the land and the sea were their principal subjects. Josephine Walpole describes and illustrates the work of Suffolk artists from Constable and Gainsborough to Munnings and Squirrell before moving on to discuss less well-known names such as Daniel Cooper, Christopher Mark Mascall and Edwin Thomas Johns. She also includes half a dozen artists who, although not born in Suffolk, made the county their artistic home, among them Anna Airy, Edmund Lawrence van Someren and Harry Becker. This is a well-researched, stunning work, that is sure to enhance the reputations of some extremely talented but seriously underrated Suffolk artists. Подробнее
100 Japanese Posters 2001-2010 Japanese graphic design for advertising boasts a tradition like that of no other country in terms of age, inventive, colour, drawing and, of course, calligraphy, with Latin, Chinese and Japanese characters nearly always appearing side by side. The abundance of signs and colours and the eurhythmy of images and words in these posters all draw on ancient tradition but are also clearly projected into the future, and nearly always ahead of the times. The catalogue illustrates the most significant works produced over the last ten years by both the great masters and younger talents. It includes posters selected by a committee comprising the two masters of contemporary graphic design Kazumasa Nagai and Shin Matsunaga, who also designed the cover. Подробнее

In the Presence of Things: Four Centuries of European Still-life Painting
, 2012
The exhibition which this catalogue accompanies is the second part of a story which began with last year's show at the Gulbenkian, 'In the Presence of Things: Four Centuries of European Still-Life Painting'. The latter traced the evolution in Europe of the type of picture now known as the still life, from its beginnings in the seventeenth century over a chronological span of two centuries. It illustrated the wide range of artistic approaches to the abiding themes of still-life painting — the fruit piece, the game piece, kitchen and banquet still lifes, the flower painting, and the trompe l'oeil — as well as the varying cultural and social significance of such arrangements of foodstuffs, objects and commodities. The exhibition concentrated on the artistic motivations of painters and particularly the ways in which they were inspired by the idea of the still life as an 'imitation of nature'. Therefore, a generous selection of works demonstrated the artifice and virtuosity of seventeenth-century painters in response to this fundamental aesthetic challenge. The exhibition ended at a crossroads, exemplified by the paintings of Luiz Melendez, who copied arrangements of objects on tabletops before him with obsessive accuracy, and the two artists who ultimately took the still life into new expressive directions, Chardin and Goya. The present exhibition picks up the story of still life in nineteenth-century France, showing the revival of interest in the genre among avant-garde painters who responded to artistic traditions. However, the themes that are played out in the different sections of the show — including the breadth and complexity of ideas associated with the still life, its new challenges and excitements, and the stresses placed on this very category of art itself — take the visitor far away from the artistic world described in the first part. The reason for this is to be seen in the manifold aspects of the cultural context explored here; modernity. Подробнее

Designing Celtic Ornament
, 2011
Drawing on the immense popularity and the timeless appeal of Celtic ornaments, author David Balade, an acclaimed artist who created many drawings and paintings in the Celtic style, has chosen the most interesting, diverse and typical patterns and motifs of Celtic art for this beautifully designed practical and historical sourcebook. Starting with an illustrated introduction to the Celts and the development of Celtic art, all designs showcased in Designing Celtic Ornament are placed in their historical context. The chapters which follow examine the major patterns of Celtic ornamentation: spirals, interlacements, labyrinths and beasts. Each chapter opens with a general introduction to the elements of the pattern and is followed by the many modifications it underwent during the ages. A short introduction to each variation with illustrated examples from magnificent manuscripts such as the Book of Kells, The Book of Durrow or the Lindisfarne Gospels explains the specific characteristics of a certain pattern, how it was created and what it symbolised. More than 200 of the depicted designs can be reproduced and applied to contemporary work. The final chapter gives easy to follow step-by-step instructions for replicating twenty of the most beautiful motifs to be found in this exquisite collection of Celtic ornaments. Designing Celtic Ornament not only explores the history and symbolism of the most popular Celtic motifs, but also provides a fantastic and ideal resource for artists, designers and crafters working in all media. The Architectural Model: Tool, Fetish, Small Utopia This book is the result of pioneering research work at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM, German Museum of Architecture) in Frankfurt-on-the-Main. Investigated is the architectural model as distinct means and method of creating and presenting architecture or architectural ideas and concepts, rather than the model merely representing a specific building e.g. as part of an architect's oeuvre. While architectural photography and drawing has been subject of countless exhibitions and publications, no comparable research on the architectural model has been done so far. This book coincides with an exhibition at the DAM in summer 2012. The authors and curators have drawn from the museum's own vast collection of models created by over 400 architects from 25 countries. The book presents 100 models, featuring works of renowned architects such as Norman Foster, Arata Isozaki, Louis I. Kahn, Rem Koolhaas, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frei Otto, Aldo Rossi, Skidmore Owings & Merrill and James Stirling. The images are complemented by detailed descriptions of each item and by comprehensive essays on the results of the entire research project. Подробнее
The Springtime of the Renaissance: Sculpture and the Arts in Florence 1400-60 The exhibition is divided into different parts, the first (Section I: The Legacy of the Fathers) exploring the rediscovery of ancient art in the 13th and 14th centuries by the likes of Nicola Pisano, Arnolfo and their successors. It then looks into the assimilation of Gothic style of French origin, including Brunelleschi's renowned sculpture, which is the starting point for the Early Renaissance. The exhibition follows development and influences from monumental sculptures by the likes of Donatello, Ghiberti, Nanni di Banco and Michelozzo, painting by artists such as Masaccio, Paolo Uccello, Andrea del Castagno and Filippo Lippi, and the impact on the political and spiritual mood of the city. Other elements include the development of perspective in bas-relief work, a taste for 'new beauty' and new commissions in places of worship, and the transition to the private patronage of the powerful Medici family. This beautiful exhibition catalogue encompasses the exhibition through over 200 images. Подробнее

Pompeii: Under the Sign of Isis The great Isis Temple, Egyptian style in house decoration, an artificial canal reproducing the Nile in a villa — Isis and Egypt were very dear to the Pompeian people. During archaeological digs in Pompeii the remains of a young girl — running from the eruption — were found; in her arms she was clutching her silver statue of Isis. The first archaeological discoveries in Pompeii, during the eighteenth century, were integral in spreading one of the strongest fascinations with all things Egyptian during modern times; the discoveries influenced art, fashion, writers and sculptors across the globe. Pompeii was an unavoidable stop in the Grand Tour and still remains essential for any contemporary traveller especially fond of Egyptian esotericism. Подробнее
Giotto E Compagni Giotto (c.1267-1337) is the foremost renovator of Western painting after classical Antiquity. The Tuscan artist was celebrated by his contemporaries, including Dante, and is universally considered one of the greatest artists of all times. The three Louvre altarpieces are the starting point of the exhibit: the large St. Francis receiving the stigmata, a signed work from Giotto's early years and originally in Pisa, the momumental painted cross, often overlooked because of conservation problems but newly restored, and the noteworthy Crucifixion, key to understand the activity of Giotto and his workshop in Naples around 1330. The latter work had profound iconographic and stylistic influence in France due to the close links between Naple's sovereigns of the time, the Anjou, and their French cousins. Additional works from French and foreign collections — including drawings, manuscripts and panel paintings — will help shed light on Giotto, his workshop and the liturgical role of his altarpieces. The World Ornament Sourcebook This amazing compilation of decorative motifs from around the world is unparalleled in its range of coverage with examples from early Greek, Roman and Egyptian designs through those of the 19th century. Geographically diverse, the book covers ornamentation from Asia and Africa as well as Europe and the Americas. Originally published in the 19th century in two volumes, this work by Auguste Racinet was an invaluable resource to artists, designers and architects when it was first published and continues to be so today. The period when Racinet's volumes were being published for the first time (1869 through 1887) saw a renewed interest in classicism and the decorative arts and Racinet's work was certainly influential. With 220 colour plates comprising over 1500 decorative motifs derived from illuminated manuscripts, jewellery, tiles, weaponry, wall painting and other sources, the book is not only inspirational, but also serves as both a visual reference of the motifs and an insight into the aesthetics of different cultures and periods. We are pleased to offer this opulent and beautifully colourful title in a combined single volume. A book that every graphic designer, architect, fashion designer or artist must have, it will also appeal to those interested in aesthetics and visual culture. Подробнее
Master Drawings: Michelangelo to Moore
, 2013
The collection of drawings in the Ashmolean is one of the greatest treasures of the University of Oxford. It began spectacularly in 1843 when a group of drawings by Raphael and Michelangelo that had previously belonged to the portrait painter, Sir Thomas Lawrence, was bought by subscription. Lawrence's collection was one of the greatest collections of Old Master drawings ever assembled and its dispersal was much regretted. The Raphaels and Michelangelos, however, were the jewels in its crown. Following their arrival in Oxford, their fame attracted a number of gifts and bequests of drawings and watercolours by Durer, Claude Lorraine, Brueghel, J. M. W Turner and many others. This is a story not only of Old Masters but of benefactors — Francis Douce, Chambers Hall, John Ruskin and their successors — whose different tastes account for the variety of the drawings in the modern Print Room. It is a story also of the curators who bought them. In particular, it is the story of Sir Karl Parker who arrived at the museum in 1934 and left a collection when he retired in 1962 that comprehensively covered the history of the art of drawing in Europe from its origins to the present day. The exhibition, Master Drawings: Michelangelo to Moore, celebrates this history. It includes many of the finest drawings in Oxford, representing the work of many different artists: Raphael and Michelangelo; Durer and the artists of the Northern Renaissance; Guercino and Rubens; Boucher and Tiepolo; German Romantics; J. M. W. Turner; Degas and Pissarro; the artists of the Ballets Russes; British twentieth-century artists from Gwen John to Hockney; and much else. Подробнее
