Gabellini Pared to programmatic essence, Michael Gabellini’s work emanates a serenity that belies an underlying complexity. His spaces unfold as intricately crafted, yet subtle stages for the interaction of volume, light, and materials. Initially recognized for his work for major fashion brands such as Giorgio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo, and, especially, Jil Sander, Gabellini set a new aesthetic standard in retail design. Equally innovative is Gabellini’s approach to the design of private residences and spaces for contemporary art, including both internationally-known galleries and special exhibitions. Gabellini’s luminous aesthetic will be the centerpiece of this monograph, his first ever, featuring the alluring retail interiors and provocative art installations together with his highly sought-after residences and large-scale, public spaces, such as the recently reopened and widely acclaimed Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center. Revealing photography and insightful text contributions by Paola Antonelli and Hans-Ulrich Obrist, among others, will make this one of the most anticipated design monographs of the year. Подробнее
Jeffrey Bilhuber: Defining Luxury: The Qualities of Life at Home Jeffrey Bilhuber returns with a second book after Design Basics, his successful debut volume. In a lavish new format, the media-savvy designer for tastemakers and celebrities presents his most recent projects from coast to coast. Bilhuber views luxury as essential to every life well-lived, a way of appreciating and sharing our joy in existence, not the exclusive purview of the few. The designer encourages the reader to seek, aspire, and revel in luxury at home, however simple or adorned: from the embrace of the perfectly tufted reading chair to an heirloom vase cradling freshly cut garden roses to a dazzling chandelier that makes light dance. In seven chapters filled with charming anecdotes and lovely observations, the designer—whom Hamish Bowles has likened to a twenty-first century Billy Baldwin—explores the idea of luxury as life’s abundance reflected in a home’s varied elements: Discovery, Passion, History, Ornament, Grace, Comfort, and Delight. Each project discussed evokes the many qualities of a distinctively American luxury practically expressed and fully enjoyed at home: beauty, family, refinement, and hospitality. Within these, the reader gleans insight from Bilhuber’s inimitable style and learns that luxury is about cultivating a state of mind as much as it is about the objects with which we surround ourselves. Greg Lynn Form
, 2008
Edited by Mark Rappolt with contributions by: J. G. Ballard, Chris Bangle, Rene Daalder, Sonia Eram, Imaginary Forces, Brian C. Goodwin, Jeffrey Kipnis, Sylvia Lavin, Ross Lovegrove, Ari Marcopoulos, Peter Schroder, and Bruce Sterling. One of the most provocative and exciting architects today, Greg Lynn has defined how designers and architects use computers as a medium, operating in an expanded field that fuses cutting-edge technology, contemporary art, and science fiction aesthetics with architectural form. At the epicenter of a debate about the role of digital design in architecture and design, his projects skillfully blend high technology and detailed craftsmanship, driven by modeling software from the film and aerospace industries. Included are contributions from theorists, architects, and artists, and futurists such as J. G. Ballard and Bruce Sterling. Greg Lynn Form offers a window into Lynn’s methods and techniques, theoretical positions, and career trajectory. Rather than a retrospective of Lynn’s career, it is thought-provoking and forward-looking. Подробнее
Narciso Rodriguez The two-time winner of the Best Designer of the Year Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and hailed as the king of minimalism, Narciso Rodriguez is poised to take his place in the pantheon of great American designers. As Anna Wintour put it, «No one but Narciso has ever made a simple line look more stunning». Like the famously copied wedding dress he made for Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Rodriguez’s designs are revered for their exquisite tailoring but also for being wearable. His exceptionally varied and loyal following — from Salma Hayek and Sarah Jessica Parker, to Oprah Winfrey and the late Celia Cruz—is a testament to his success. This elegant volume reveals the artist at work in his atelier. Rodriguez takes his inspiration from the life that surrounds him — whether it’s the subtle color of faded paint on a façade, a pattern made by the sand, or the gesture of a young man on a skateboard — and records it in sketchbooks and vivid snapshots. Always experimenting with new textiles and textures, he creates deceptively simple montages — artworks in their own right — that gracefully yield the stunning dresses we see flowing down the runway. Regency Redux: High Style Interiors: Napoleonic, Classical Moderne, and Hollywood Regency The classical elegance of the Regency period in England is considered one of the most sophisticated and refined moments in design history. Throughout the twentieth century, designers took elements of the Regency vocabulary and restyled them to meld with the reigning design aesthetic of the day to extraordinary effect. The book opens with an introduction to the original Regency period, which built its sophisticated aesthetic on the example of the Neoclassical style of Napoleon’s time. It then picks up with the Art Deco designs of Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Süe et Mare in France. By the 1930s, the Vogue Regency returned home to England where Sibyl Colefax and Syrie Maugham created stylized classical interiors. In America, the Regency revival took hold in Hollywood on the lavish film sets of the 1930s and ‘40s. Designers and architects to the stars such as Billy Haines and T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings made a mark with their work for the Hollywood elite. The book concludes with Regency fashions of the 1930s and ‘40s, when Dorothy Draper and Elsie de Wolfe cut a stylish swath with their Regency-infused designs from coast to coast. Rounding out the vintage interiors are designs by acclaimed contemporary designers. Each chapter is illustrated with a rich selection of images of interiors, film sets, and furniture. Подробнее

Georgian Style and Design for Contemporary Living Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, noted authority on using traditional style in contemporary settings, examines how the Georgian era is inspiring today’s interiors. Associated by most Americans with Colonial Williamsburg or Jefferson’s Monticello, the Georgian style confers a sense of comfortable luxury that makes any home a haven, as well as a showcase. Proceeding room by room, she examines how updated Georgian style relates to contemporary living. In addition to the staple interior spaces such as living room, kitchen, and bedroom, the book uncovers new applications of Georgian style in such contemporary «must-haves» like home offices, media rooms, fitness rooms, and the transformation of the bath into the home spa. Each chapter is illustrated with photographs that demonstrate the meaning of pleasing proportions and good layouts, complete with detail shots of fabric swatches, color samples, and drawings from the author’s design portfolio. A key feature is the focus on design flow to bring consistency to the entire home, and how to juggle spaces for the less formal, family-friendly orientation that is the hallmark of contemporary living. Applying classic design principles to indoor/outdoor lifestyles and eco-friendly living is also discussed. Подробнее
Rooms to Inspire in the Country: The Infinite Possibilities of American House Design
, 2009
Country living evokes bucolic landscapes and picturesque villages—rolling Connecticut countryside, verdant farmland, the sun-drenched hills of Malibu—and the architecture that echoes these idyllic settings. These houses, ranging from family estates to weekend retreats, are the personal homes of decorators and tastemakers, including Jonathan Adler, Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, and Steven Gambrel. The properties exemplify varied design perspectives and provide fresh ideas about how country living is ideal for creative expression. This inspiring medley ranges from Tony Duquette’s exotic pavilion-style California home to a charming New York Victorian, a modernist Palm Springs desert getaway by Neutra, a nineteenth-century Gothic cottage on Shelter Island, and an eighteenth-century Connecticut house. Along with design ideas for interiors, the book also covers the garden and pool areas. Since outdoor entertaining is an integral part of country living, a section devoted to tabletop display is included. These beautifully photographed inspirations encourage the reader to explore the design opportunities in the country guided by the best interior designers. Подробнее

French Postcards: An Album of Vintage Erotica Long before pin-ups, Playboy, or the Internet, enterprising Parisians at the turn of the 20-th century turned the relatively new invention of the camera toward the female nude. Artfully posed with classical architecture or in flirtatious dishabille with stockings and lingerie, the winking models embody the erotic fantasies of a repressed society. Some of the women shown are demure and shy, wearing a slip or low-cut blouse-a great tease in an age when showing an ankle was scandalous. Their daring glimpses of decolletage carry a particular charge, so rare in today's world of overexposure. These cards were sold, often in packets, at street kiosks and under tabac counters, hush-hush but nevertheless ubiquitous. As foreigners flooded the city in the early part of the 20-th century, the cards became cherished souvenirs that were secretly collected and shared among men abroad. This is when the phrase «French postcards» became a euphemistic code for erotic nude images. These lovely ladies evoke a campy nostalgia that celebrates a healthy, voluptuous ideal of sensual feminine beauty. More retro than raunchy, French Postcards has the saucy fun of a naughty valentine, sure to charm and entertain a friend or lover. Подробнее

These houses merge into the landscape, and, with names like Ravine Bluff, Cloud Chaser, and Shadow Caster, their ties to the land and climate are clear. Подробнее
Buildings in Wood
, 2005
This epic history is the first comprehensive survey of the use of wood in architecture throughout the ages. The book is organized both chronologically and geographically. It features works from the oldest heritage of wooden buildings (Kyoto's Buddhist temples and Scandinavia's pagan-inspired stave churches) to the latest cutting edge designs, proving that wood is on the rise as the preferred material in these ecologically conscious times. Every region of the world with a native tradition of building with wood is carefully examined. In North America, the book demonstrates the European origins of New England's clapboards and saltboxes, and later shows how such sophisticated California architects as Greene & Greene or Bernard Maybeck could blend age-old traditions of the Far East and Switzerland with a Pacific Coast sense of novelty and whimsy. Spectacular and diverse photographs highlight the architectural masterpieces of wooden architecture throughout the world, illustrating that wood is a building material with a deep history as well as a vibrant future. Owen Jones: Design, Ornament, Architecture and Theory in an Age of Transition Owen Jones was, and still remains, a highly influential force in the world of architecture and design. His prolific and impressive work—captured here in its various stages through drawings, architectural plans, and photographs—is as current, imaginative, and important now as when it first emerged more than 125 years ago. Owen Jones: Design, Ornament, Architecture & Theory in an Age in Transition fills a serious gap in the history of Victorian design. In his early career Jones was recognized as an authority on Oriental design. In the 1850-s he was commissioned to decorate the interior of Joseph Paxton's magnificent World's Fair Crystal Palace in London. Other signature projects include St. James' Hall, the Crystal Palace Bazaar, Osler's Glass Shop, and Eynsham Hall at Oxford. In 1856 he completed his monumental Grammar of Ornament, which remains one of the most influential works on design ever published and is a source for many artists and designers today. More than just an architect, Jones' skills were applied to designing interiors, books, textiles, furniture, and carpet. His philosophy can most accurately be expressed in his words, «Form without color is like a body without a soul.» Подробнее
