Steve Mccurry: The Unguarded Moment: Thirty Years Of Photography By Steve Mccurry
The title of this book is a phrase that Steve McCurry uses a lot when talking about his work — he is always trying to capture those 'unguarded moments' when people are at their most unselfconscious and natural. McCurry takes photographs all over the world, for National Geographic magazine and his own projects, so this book includes the places, colours and forms of Yemen, Mali, Niger, Chad, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar (Burma), France and the former Yugoslavia, among others. «The Unguarded Moment» is the same size as South Southeast, but apart from the wider range of countries and continents covered, another key difference between the two titles is that all the images in this new book are landscape format. In «The Unguarded Moment», people go about their everyday business in extraordinary circumstances and settings, like the young tea vendor wading through the waist-deep monsoon waters in India, the fishermen casting their nets in the Niger river in Mali's Sahel Desert and the boy working in a candy factory in Kabul, Afghanistan. This book includes striking portraits of a Tuareg woman in Mali, an intense you ng gypsy boy in Marseille, France and pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma. There are children paying close attention to their teachers in school rooms in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, as well as five young monks happily playing with computer games at a monastery in India, just like any other boys their age would.

Whistler
James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was one of the most original artists of the late 19th-century. Flamboyant dandy and ebullient publicist, friend of Oscar Wilde, Whistler was also a meticulous craftsman dedicated to the perfection of his art. He was born in the United States but travelled to Paris to study painting. Under the influence of Courbet, he began as a realist painter, but gradually developed a startlingly original method of composition, refining his technique to the barest essentials. He was one of the first to argue that the abstract ingredients of a painting — the lines, shapes, colours and tones — could in themselves be the subject; he entitled the portrait of his mother «Arrangement in Grey and Black». His emphasis on selection and swiftness of execution made a shocking contrast with the art of his day, concerned as it was with finish and elaborate literary allusions. Ruskin, the champion of Pre-Raphaelitism, accused him of «flinging a pot of paint in the public's face» — a comment that promptly inspired the famous lawsuit which left Whistler victorious but bankrupt. Whistler was one of the most independent artists in the second half of the nineteenth century, comparable in stature with Degas. His «Nocturnes» create an indefinable mood of wistful poetry, while his portraits remain some of the most haunting images in nineteenth-century art.

Dean, Tacita
Although she emerged in the 1990s, Berlin-based English artist Tacita Dean has in her work a quiet depth not usually associated with the Pop and hype of the 'cool Britannia' scene. Her film installations explore how chance and coincidence influence daily life, constructing narratives that connect past and present, fact and fiction, private histories and larger events. In «Disappearance at Sea» (1996) a three-part installation and artist's book, Dean documents the tragic account of Donald Crowhurst and his attempt to fake a solo voyage around the globe, his eventual loss of sanity and his death at sea. The work tells the story through various fragments and landscapes, including a magnificent sea vista from a lighthouse beacon that produces a mysterious 'missing narrative' (as the artist calls it) reminiscent of 19th century atmospheric sea — and landscape painters. «FLOH» (2002) is a collection of photographs discovered by the artist in flea markets across Europe and America — holiday snaps or banal occurrences and events retrieved by the artist. Other works include a jukebox filled with ambient sound recordings from around the world, an endlessly turning Berlin seen from the revolving restaurant of the Fersehturm television tower and a frustrated attempt to follow directions (as misleading as they are meticulous) to find Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty in Utah's Great Salt Lake. Her work has been presented at museums and galleries throughout the world (including the DePont Foundation, Tilburg, the Netherlands; Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Basel; Tate Britain, London; Fundacao la Caixa, Barcelona; the Hirsshorn Museum, Washington D.C.; Musee d'Art Modern de la Ville de Paris; and Museu Serralves, Portugal) and her films have also been screened at the Sundance Film Festival.

Frank Lloyd Wright Architect
This monograph explores the underlying themes and principles of Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture. It examines the consistent and systematic qualities underlying all of Wright's designs. The text's chronological presentation, which emphasizes key designs and those related to them thematically, is paralleled by an examination of the development of three primary principles, simultaneously active in Wright's work, and singled out by him as being of fundamental importance in his understanding of architecture. First, Wright's development of concepts and methods for making architectural space; how these ideas derived from his designs for interior spaces and their experience; and how in Wright's architecture the occupant's movement (position) was critical to the experience of the spatial order (composition). Secondly, Wright's development of concepts and methods for ordering space through the manner of its construction; how this order determined his search for «the nature of materials» and structures. The author then considers the third aspect of Wright's designs: the architect's development of concepts and methods for establishing the relationship between his architecture and the landscape; and how he designed buildings where landscape, interior space and construction materials are woven together to become the setting for the repeated rituals of daily life.

Modern Landscape
Society is becoming preoccupied with the issue of landscape, not only as an area of design and study but also as it is affected by building development and the maintenance of eco-systems. This interest ranges well beyond the immediate professions of landscape architecture, architecture and town and regional planning. This book extends the existing debate to examine recent projects and their part in our growing concern about, and responsibility for, the maintenance and enhancement of our natural spaces. Following an introductory essay, the book is arranged into four sections, which each deal with different aspects of landscape design. The case-study projects, which have all been completed since the late 1990s, are discussed in detail and related to their historical context and influences. «Parkland» deals with large-scale designed environments such as Castletown Cox Park in Ireland and the Barcelona Botanic Gardens. «Architecture as Landscape» presents major architectural projects into which landscapes have been successfully integrated, including the Niigata Performing Arts Centre, Japan, and the Imperial War Museum in Manchester. «Garden Landscapes» focuses on schemes such as the Borneo Sporenburg neighbourhood in Amsterdam and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, where contemporary gardens have been created that comply with ecological and aesthetic priorities in tightly prescribed settings. «Urban Interventions» identifies landscape projects in urban locations which have been decisive in providing an improved solution to an existing environmental design problem, such as the Haas Promenade in Jerusalem and the Alexanderinkatu in Helsinki. The author compares 32 projects by a variety of contemporary architects and designers such as Martha Schwartz (USA), Tadao Ando (Japan), Colvin & Moggridge (UK), Hans Hollein (Austria) and West 8 (The Netherlands).

Terrine
Reynaud
,
2013
A terrine is a traditional dish that takes its name from the earthenware pot in which it is cooked. Originally, terrines were made with chunks of meat, although modern recipes now include lighter alternatives such as fish and vegetables, offering a colourful and intensely flavoured range. The terrine is once again becoming a popular dish for sharing amongst friends, family and neighbours. Stephane Reynaud, a celebrated chef who co-owns a restaurant in Paris and comes from a family of pig butchers, brings together his passion for rural French cooking and his enthusiasm for modern cuisine. His second cookbook, «Terrine», is a compact and charming celebration of how to prepare, serve and enjoy this traditional, rustic food.As well as giving simple recipes for classic terrines, Reynaud also celebrates modern tastes and includes some more adventurous recipes that have been tried, tested, and loved. Each chapter in this book includes a small introduction, a few well-loved favourites as well as some surprising recipes that have evolved with contemporary cuisine. The broad range on offer includes: Rabbit and Nut Terrine; Spring Vegetable Terrine; Gorgonzola, Mascarpone and Nut Terrine; as well as dessert terrines such as a Chocolate and Raspberry Terrine. The book is beautifully illustrated with photographs of each recipe, and each chapter includes a selection of sauces to accompany the main dishes. With such a diverse and surprising range of dishes, from classics through to modern adaptations, this book is guaranteed to put terrines back on the menu.

Carlo Scarpa by Robert McCarter
Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) is a unique figure in the Modern movement and his work in fact challenged, and continues to challenge, accepted notions of modern architecture. While several books have been published on the subject of Scarpa, the majority narrow in their focus, no comprehensive monograph has been produced to date and certainly not approaching the breadth and depth proposed here by Robert McCarter, who has developed a reputation and following for his meticulously researched, experentially-based, and jargon-free accounts of key figures in Modern architecture. This book will provide the definitive study of Scarpa's many accomplishments, including such works at the Canova Museum, the Castelvechhio Museum, the Brion Cemetery, among others.

Mary Ellen Mark: Seen Behind the Scene
Mary Ellen Mark has worked on over a hundred film sets since 1968, including such legendary productions as Apocalypse Now, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Gandhi, as well as recent Oscar-winning productions such as Moulin Rouge, Babel and Sweeney Todd, among many others. Mark's film photographs are a rare archive as she is afforded unprecedented access to the actors and the set permitted for weeks at a time to roam freely. Mark is one of the most talented photojournalists working today and her unique ability to capture gesture and expression enables her to fully reveal the story of life on set. In photographs that range from dramatic moments of Federico Fellini at work on on Satyricon, to the well-known pranksters Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman fooling around on set, from Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt rehearsing on set in Morocco for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Babel, to Johnny Depp in make-up for Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, we are given access to unguarded moments in film-making and to this rarely-seen world. Some of the film industry's best-known figures have also contributed their own anecdotes of life on set including tales of growing up on set by Sofia Coppola, of the disconcerting experience of night shoots by Helen Mirren, and the work that goes into 'getting that take' from Catch 22 director Mike Nichols. This is a backstage pass to the most famous film sets in history through the lens of an iconic photographer, sure to appeal to film and photography enthusiasts, or to anyone who ever wondered just what happens behind the scenes.
