,
2003
This exciting collection contains more than thirty richly imaginative stories from a variety of Native American sources — Cherokee to Zuni, Pawnee to Midu — covering a broad spectrum of subjects, as well as tales of little people, giants, and monsters, and of magic, enchantment, sorcery, and the spirit world. Readers will find stories telling how the earth, people, and bison were created and how fire was discovered, while others introduce the hero Glooscap and the Maiden of the Yellow Rocks. Still other traditional tales tell of the troubles Rabbit's boastfulness got him into, and about the clever ways Little Blue Fox managed to escape from Coyote. Among the stories in this collection are «The White Stone Canoe» (Chippewa), «Raven Pretends to Build a Canoe» (Tsimshian), «The Theft from the Sun» (Blackfoot), «The Loon's Necklace» (Iroquois), «The Rabbit Goes Duck Hunting» (Cherokee), «The Coyote» (Pueblo), and «The Origin of the Buffalo and of Corn» (Cheyenne). Oscar Wilde The Dover Reader
Wilde Oscar
Poet and playwright Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) wrote sparkling comedies that were the toast of London's West End in the 1890s. The master of the witty epigram who could resist anything except temptation, Wilde was imprisoned by an unjust society and died in obscurity, but his enduring works continue to enchant readers and audiences. The Irish author's only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, appears in this splendid showcase of his philosophy and wit. Additional selections include Wilde's ever-popular comedies The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband; his essay on aestheticism, «The Decay of Lying: An Observation»; his deeply moving prison letter, «De Profundis»; and fairy tales from A House of Pomegranates and The Happy Prince.

Favorite Poems
Longfellow
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was the most popular American poet of his time, and one of the most famous American poets of all time. It has been said that certain of his poems-the long narratives Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha most notably-were once read in every literate home in America. A former teacher who fulfilled his dream to make a living as a poet, Longfellow taught at Bowdoin and Harvard, was eventually honored for his poetry with degrees from Oxford and Cambridge, and is one of the few Americans to have a monument dedicated to his memory in Westminster Abbey. This choice collection of his works, which reflects his mastery of a rich variety of poetic forms and meters, includes one of his best narrative poems, The Courtship of Miles Standish. Here, too, are such famous poems as «The Village Blacksmith,» «The Wreck of the Hesperus,» «The Children's Hour,» «Paul Revere's Ride,» and other poems on subjects ranging from lost youth and Giotto's Tower to slavery and the building of a ship. Includes a selection from the Common Core State Standards Initiative: «Paul Revere's Ride.»
