Paul Cezanne: How He Amazed the World
Wenzel Angela
,

He delighted in the most basic elements of colour, size, and shape. This captivating look at the artist's life uses Cezanne's numerous paintings of his studio to explore his methods and technique, and his portraits of his family and friends to reveal Cezanne's personal history. It also points out details from his greatest masterpieces, encouraging young readers to investigate for themselves just as Cezanne explored the brilliance of the French countryside — its light and hues, textures and shadows — in a way no other artist ever has.

Scapegoats, Shambles and Shibboleths: The Queen's English from the King James Bible
Martin H. Manser
,
2009
'The fruit of his labours', Martin Manser's, SCAPEGOATS, SHAMBLES AND SHIBBOLETHS is a delightful book for all who adore the English language. 'In the twinkling of an eye' we learn that many of our most familiar phrases are taken straight from the King James Version of the Bible. Far from being 'holier than thou', it seems we quote from the Bible without even realising! Martin Manser explains in detail what it is to be 'the apple of someone's eye'! 'No modern physiology book would put it like this, but in the past the pupil of the eye was referred to as "the apple" After all, it was shaped like one. In addition, because it was recognised to be the most important part of the eye it was a symbol for all things precious. The most valuable part of a highly valued organ of the body. Dotted around the Bible the phrase therefore represents anything that is of great worth — whether it is the law of God in Proverbs 7 v 2, the people of Israel found and nurtured in the desert or as an individual on the receiving end of divine care.' A quirky present, SCAPEGOATS SHAMBLES AND SHIBBOLETHS will amuse and entertain as well as shed a thought-provoking light on the background to our rich and varied language.

William Merritt Chase: Portraits in Oil
Ronald G. Pisano
,
2007
The great American artist William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) completed a wide variety of portraits over his long career. Among his subjects were presidents, businessmen, celebrities, New York luminaries, and members of his family as well as a number of self-portraits. Chase's ability to capture a likeness was renowned, yet it was his dashing and bravura brushwork that truly set his portraits apart. This highly anticipated book presents for the first time the entire collection of Chase's known portraits in oil. Each is gorgeously reproduced, and many are published in colour for the first time. This is the second of four volumes cataloguing the complete works of William Merritt Chase. The catalogue raisonne project has presented immense challenges, for Chase kept no records at all, and staggering numbers of forgeries of his work appeared soon after he died. Finding many of his portraits was especially difficult, as no log book of sitters has been located and no other records exist for those works that were not publicly exhibited. Nevertheless, Ronald Pisano's meticulous research has uncovered more than six hundred portraits in private and public collections. Among the most notable are Chase's penetrating portrait of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (The Metropolitan Museum of Art), a commanding portrait of Dora Wheeler (Cleveland Museum of Art), The Feather Fan featuring Chase's oldest daughter, Alice (Musee d'Orsay, Paris), and a 1908 self-portrait (Uffizi Gallery, Florence).

Great Poems for Grand Children
Frost C.
,
2010
AARP has a mission: to nurture relationships between the generations, and transmit wisdom from grandparent to grandchild. How better to achieve this goal than through poetry? It forges an almost magical connection between people-encouraging conversation, nurturing intimacy, feeding the imagination, delighting the senses. Teacher, poet, and grandmother Celestine Frost has gathered 175 of her favorite verses and compiled them in a magnificent illustrated anthology meant for sharing. These are the poems she has read aloud to her own children and grandchildren and they explore life in all its richness, from home and family to school, nature, and animals. Even serious topics-including death-receive their due in such masterpieces as Dylan Thomas's “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night.” These have their place in an anthology for grandchildren and grandparents, alongside the playful nursery rhymes and nonsense verses. No child's library-and no loving grandparent-should be without this unique and precious volume.

Kangaroo for Christmas
Flora James
,
2011
The day before Christmas, Kathryn's present from Uncle Dingo arrives in a big box. Naturally, it's a lively kangaroo. Kathryn can't wait to show grandma, so she hops onto Adelaide's back and off they go! But getting to Grandma's proves more difficult than expected. Honking horns and screeching breaks frighten Adelaide into taking off on her own. In good Flora fashion, chaos and pure silliness ensue. When Kathryn and Adelaide finally arrive at Grandma's house, a very cool and collected Grandma sees there's nothing to be done but to get them home as swiftly as possible. A rumpus of a read, Kangaroo for Christmas is a merry Christmas tall tale full of witty illustrations that are sure to draw laughs and hoots of pleasure. James Flora (1914–1998) was a famous commercial artist from the 1940s through the 1980s. He wrote and illustrated seventeen picture books. This is the second Flora title to be brought back into print by Enchanted Lion Books. The first, published in 2010, was the 1957 book The Day the Cow Sneezed.
