Pandora's Keepers

Nine men — Oppenheimer, Teller, Fermi, Bohr, Lawrence, Bethe, Rabi, Szilard, Compton — brilliant men who believed in science and who saw before anyone else the amazing workings of an invisible world. Some of them were fleeing Nazism in Europe, others quietly slipping out of university teaching jobs, all gathering in secret wartime laboratories to create the world's first atomic bomb. At a secret laboratory in the mountains of northern New Mexico, they would crack the secret of the nuclear chain reaction and construct the most fearsome weapon mankind had ever known. Together they built a device that could incinerate a city and melt human beings so thoroughly that the only thing left would be their scorched outlines on the pavements. During the war, few of the atomic scientists questioned the wisdom of their desperate endeavour, but afterwards they were forced to deal with the sobering legacy of their creation. Some were haunted by the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and would become antinuclear weapons activists; others would go on to build bigger and even deadlier bombs.

Room Full of Mirrors
Cross Charles R.
,
2006
Jimi Hendrix continues to fascinate, and sell huge quantities of albums, even 35 years after his death. Quite apart from his influence on musicians and fans, a large part of the appeal of his sensational life story lies in the thrill of the era whose values he came to stand for. The Sixties still exert a massive pull over pop culture and this is genuinely a book for anyone interested, not only in Hendrix but also in anything to do with the pop culture of the last 40 years. Meticulously researched and sensitively and beautifully written, this is a labour of love that reveals the nuances, foibles and tragedies of the human being behind the iconic image. This is the sweeping, authoritative and colourful biography that Jimi Hendrix deserves and that his legions of fans, young and old have been waiting for.

Mark Twain: His Words, Wit, and Wisdom
Kent Rasmussen R.
,
2001
As Mark Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens had something or two to say about nearly every subject under the sun, and few above it, to boot. This fully indexed book collects more than 1800 such pearls, illustrated with some 100 drawings from Twain's books, on the topics of advertising, Adam & Eve, numerous other authors, Bermuda, celebrity, dogs, hymnbooks, luck, his pen name, Niagara Falls, porpoises, Satan, the Sphinx, Thanksgiving Day, and youth. He is even quotable on quotations: «He made me better satisfied with myself than I had ever been before. It was plain hat he had a deep fondness for humor... he made me laugh all along, and this was very trying — and very pleasant at the same time — for it was at quotations from my own book.»

Manet/Velazquez
Tinterow Gary

2003
In 1804, at the dawn of the French Empire, there were no more than a handful of Spanish paintings in public collections in France. During the course of the 19th century, however, French collectors and museums assembled substantial holdings of works by such Spanish masters as Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, and Goya. At the same time, French writers and artists — among them Delacroix, Géricault, Courbet, Millet, Bonnat, Degas, and especially, Manet — came to understand, appreciate, and emulate Spanish painting of the Golden Age. Illustrated with 349 black and white and 380 color photographs and reproductions, this book vividly demonstrates how direct contact with Spanish painting led to the taste for Realism in the 1860s, and provided a foundation for modern art. Also included in this volume are works by American artists like Whistler, Cassatt, Eakins, Chase, and Sargent that clearly reflect the pervasive influence of and taste for Spanish painting.

Learning To Kill
Mcbain Ed
,
2007
With Cop Hater, the first of his superb 87th Precinct crime novels, Ed McBain debuted in 1956. Here, after more than 100 books, the MWA Grand Master culls 25 stories he wrote before he was Ed McBain, writing in «Manhunt» and other detective magazines as Evan Hunter, Richard Marsten, and Hunt Collins. Hunter — already well known as the author of «The Blackboard Jungle» and other books before he adopted the name McBain for his police procedurals — provides new introductions for these stories of kids in trouble and women in jeopardy, private eyes and innocent bystanders, and cops and robbers, explaining how they helped launch his career as McBain.

Now and Forever: Somewhere a Band Is Playing and Leviathan '99
Bradbury Ray
,
2007
Honored with a National Book Award for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2000, a National Medal of Arts in 2004, and a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation in 2007, Ray Bradbury continues to present new work after 70 years. This is an omnibus of two previously unpublished novellas: «Somewhere a Band Is Playing» follows a writer drawn by his dreams to tiny Summerton, Arizona, a community hidden in plain view, where no small children play, and where the residents never seem to age; «Leviathan '99» is a futuristic adaptation of «Moby Dick» (Bradbury co-wrote the screenplay for John Huston's 1956 film version of Melville's book), in which fledgling astronaut Ishmael Hunnicut Jones boards the ship of a madman pursuing a planet-smashing comet.

Timothy Leary: A Biography
Robert Greenfield
,
2007
To a generation in full revolt against any form of authority, «Tune in, turn on, drop out» became a mantra, and its popularizer, Timothy Leary, a guru. A charismatic and brilliant psychologist, Leary became first intrigued and then obsessed by the effects of psychedelic drugs in the 1960s while teaching at Harvard, where he not only encouraged but instituted their experimental use among students and faculty. Journalist and editor Robert Greenfield (also the biographer of Jerry Garcia and rock promoter Bill Graham) presents this first major biography of Leary, immersing the reader in the life and times of this intriguing but troubled counterculture icon.

Father Fox's Christmas Rhymes
Clyde Watson

2003
Sisters Clyde and Wendy Watson bring back Father Fox for the first time since «Father Fox's Pennyrhymes», which was nominated for a National Book Award when it appeared more than 30 years ago. This time the boisterous, loving patriarch is leading his family's Christmas celebrations: «Here I am, old Father Fox / With sweets in my pockets and holes in my socks / Bringing a basket brimful of cheer / a toy for each day until Christmas is here.» The detailed, homey illustrations in this book for youngsters up to 7 suggest a rural yuletide of any year, and a number of scenes focus on the mystery and fellowship of the season.

Monumental Propaganda

Aglaya Stepanova Revkina is a true believer in Stalin — so much so that when Khrushchev comes to power and statues of Stalin are pulled down all over the Soviet Union, Aglaya takes the one she helped erect in her provincial town of Dolgov and installs it in her apartment as a potent totem. In this arch satire by the author of «The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Private Ivan Chonkin», Aglaya and her statue watch as Khrushchev relents to Brezhnev, Brezhnev relents to stagnation, and the U.S.S.R. itself dissolves away in dissent. But even the new freedom has its perils, and some wonder if Russia just needs a strong leader again.

Sharpe's Fury
Bernard Cornwell
,
2006
Sharpe is back, in this 21st entry in Bernard Cornwell's consistently brilliant historical adventure series. In the winter of 1811 the war against Napoleon seems lost. Spain has fallen except for Cádiz, now under siege. Richard Sharpe and his company are sent to break a bridge across the River Guadiana. What they find is that they have more than one enemy, including a murderous priest blackmailing the British ambassador with a pack of letters to his prostitute lover, a Spanish force more interested in appeasing the French than fighting them, and their own pompous Brigadier Moon. As he does so well, Cornwell brings the historical battle of Barrosa to life, in which an outnumbered British infantry refused to surrender.

Breaking Open Japan
George Feifer
,
2006
The modern clash between East and West began in earnest in 1853, suggests George Feifer, when Commodore Matthew Perry landed in Japan, intending to frighten the Japanese into submission. Due to his careful preparation and gunboat diplomacy, he succeeded; an unequal treaty was signed at Kanagawa, which opened ports to America and ended centuries of Japanese isolation. Both sides believed they were morally and culturally superior to the other, and misunderstandings and distrust would persist far into the 20th century. Admiral Yamamoto Isoruku, the mastermind of the Pearl Harbor attack, once said that he had joined the Navy because he «wanted to repay Commodore Perry's visit.»

Journey of the Jihadist
Fawaz A. Gerges
,
2006
In this fascinating and highly informative account of the development of militant Islamist praxis and ideology in the contemporary Middle East, [Fawaz] Gerges («The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global») explains what the jihadists are about and what they intend to accomplish. In addition to relying on a number of primary Arabic sources, the author has interviewed several jihadists, most importantly Kamal al-Said Habib, who founded the Jihadist Movement. Gerges, born and raised a Christian in Lebanon, demonstrates remarkable objectivity in explaining the world as seen from the vantage point of Muslim militants.... The author's ability to explain complex issues in a jargon-free and easy-flowing narrative makes this book one of the best, most useful, and most timely volumes for nonspecialist readers.

Lenin's Private War
Lesley Chamberlain
,
2007
In 1922, Vladimir Lenin personally drew up a list of some 160 «undesirable» intellectuals — mostly philosophers, academics, scientists, and journalists — to be deported from the new Soviet State. «We're going to cleanse Russia once and for all» he wrote to Stalin, whose job it was to oversee the deportation. Two ships sailed from Petrograd that autumn, taking Old Russia's eminent men and their families away to what would become permanent exile in Berlin, Prague, and Paris. Through journals, letters, memoirs, and personal accounts, Lesley Chamberlain creates a rich portrait of these banished thinkers and their families. She describes the world they left behind, the émigré communities they were forced to join, and the enduring power of the works they produced in exile.
