Gio Ponti: Minimum Design
, 2011
Gio Ponti (Milano 1891-1979) was founder of 'Domus', Europe's most influential architecture and design magazine. Artistic director of Richard-Ginori, the ceramics manufacturer. Ponti's style was dominated by an exultant sense of the aesthetic both in his objects and his numerous buildings. Published in the same style of the successful Minimum Architects series, the Minimum Designers series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind to be discovered. These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarizing the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject. Hardy Amies
, 2012
Hardy Amies epitomised understated British couture, emphasising the cut of fine materials by tailored construction. Untrained in dress-making, he achieved Vogue 1937 headlines with his 'Panic' suit, a reconstructed design of a staple in every woman's wardrobe, wittily named to reflect current events. Evoking the glamour of pre-war London while meeting the demands of contemporary society's activities — town to country, morning to night — Amies designs drew a star-studded clientele. His war-time 'utility' designs revealed his design philosophy (and partly concealed his role as head of the Belgian Section of SOE), unveiling a needle-sharp intelligence and intuition for the changing world of fashion, his elegant execution of which was rewarded through the influential seal of approval by HM Queen Elizabeth II, as Princess Elizabeth, in 1950. The first post-war international designer to visit the USA, Amies's luxurious style produced lucrative global business opportunities, including ready-to-wear, menswear shown as couture, and wide-ranging merchandising options. The Centre Cannot Hold
, 2012
Having spent the last 20 years in Africa photographing wildlife alongside the likes of Peter Beard, David Gulden has come to understand that his endeavour is more than one to create appealing artworks, but instead to create a document of the declining landscape of all the precious creatures that live there. In 95 black-and-white photographs that feature tranquility, bursts of action, portraiture, and the natural canvas of the animals and their environments, he visualises for us the concept of global change so famously described by William Yeats in his poem, 'The Second Coming', and from which the inspired title of this work derives. Join this extraordinary photographer and environmentalist, David Gulden, on a phenomenal personal yet universal safari that until the publication of this book would not have been possible except through actual travel; a safari where nature's creatures are captured with greater intimacy and artistry than one would have thought possible. Caravaggio: The Stories of St Matthew This new series examines several highly regarded masterpieces in an attempt to unravel the mysteries that surround them. Through an innovative concept and a fresh approach, 'Art Mysteries', edited by Marco Carminati and Stefano Zuffi, presents an up-to-date and spectacular reading of famous paintings, investigating key clues that suggest previously unknown background information. 'The Stories of St Matthew' marked a turning point in Caravaggio's career, and in the history of painting itself. Behind their mystery lies an unprecedented creative process, characterised by choices and pentimenti revealed by detailed analyses. At the time, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was an unruly thirty-year-old painter of small to medium-sized works, commissioned privately. Although at first Cardinal Mathieu Cointrel had no intention of involving Caravaggio in the decoration of his family chapel in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, fate (a positive fate in the light of art history) offered the painter, through a series of contretemps and coincidences, the chance of a lifetime to become a publicly acclaimed master. Carlo Mollino: Minimum Design
, 2012
Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) was one of the foremost figures in a generation of Italian architects. Born at the dawn of the twentieth century, his work embodied the renewal of the national artistic season and marked the golden age of Italy's global identity. This biography demonstrates Mollino's unique anti-conformist attitude, a design statement that was at odds with the zeitgeist in his home town, Turin, in the 1980s. This brave move, however, paid off and was the reason for the great international interest in his extraordinary creative skills in the fields of architecture, design and photography. Also famous for his love for mountains, cars and aviation, Mollino captured the attention (and the amazement) of the critics for the individuality of his works. In architecture, furniture and interior design, his output combined examples of Surrealist sensibility and a pioneering and highly personal organic approach. His famous three-legged chairs, tables with zoomorphic shapes, armchairs 'on tiptoe' and daring skeletal structures have in recent years achieved the very peak of world collecting, thereby contributing to his renown as an unparalleled creator. Published in the same style as the successful 'Minimum Architects' series, the 'Minimum Design' series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. The lamp on our desk, the chair we are sitting on or the glasses we are wearing have a genius behind them to be discovered. Eero Saarinen: Minimum Design Eero Saarinen was born in Finland in 1910. After his family moved to the United States in 1923 Eero graduated from Yale University where he subsequently completed post-graduate work at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. This famous school of architecture and design was directed by his father Eliel and, it was here that Eero met Charles Eames and Florence Schust Knoll. The three became close friends and worked together on some of the most remarkable projects in the history of American and international design.Throughout his career Saarinen divided his time between architecture and design. He designed some of the most important post-Second World War buildings in America (the General Motors Technical Center, the MIT chapel and auditorium, the TWA Terminal at J.F.K. Airport in New York), and his objects, most of which manufactured by Knoll, are absolute icons of contemporary design. He died prematurely at the age of 51 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Published in the same style as the successful 'Minimum Architects' series, the 'Minimum Design' series includes books about the major figures in the field of design, creators of objects that have become a part of our daily lives. Through an innovative concept and a fresh approach, 'Art Mysteries', edited by Marco Carminati and Stefano Zuffi, presents an up-to-date and spectacular reading of famous paintings, investigating key clues that suggest previously unknown background information. According to a recent survey, Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa', the Louvre masterpiece, is still considered the most famous painting in the world; and yet, despite popular acclaim is still shrouded in shadow and mystery. Who is the women in the portrait? Why does she seem to be smiling at us? Why did Leonardo never finish nor sell the painting? Why is it now in France? These and other questions make this book a compelling read. Following the story of the 'Mona Lisa', we'll travel from luxurious Florentine palazzi to the magnificence of Versailles, from the austere rooms of the Louvre to World War II air raid shelters. Not to mention the sensational theft that, in 1911, had the whole word waiting with bated breath... Подробнее
Piero Della Francesca: The Montefeltro Altarpiece This new series examines several highly regarded masterpieces in an attempt to unravel the mysteries that surround them. Through an innovative concept and a fresh approach, 'Art Mysteries', edited by Marco Carminati and Stefano Zuffi, presents an up-to-date and spectacular reading of famous paintings, investigating key clues that suggest previously unknown background information. The sublime synthesis of Piero della Francesca's art, the Montefeltro Altarpiece, now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, is one of the most famous works dating from the painter's maturity. It was executed in the refined context of the Urbino court, probably to be placed above Duke Federico da Montefeltro's tomb in the Church of San Bernardino. Napoleon's soldiers took it to Milan in 1811, and since then it has never ceased to fascinate and intrigue viewers. What does its perfect marble architecture mean? Who exactly are the characters portrayed? Above all, what is the egg hanging from the shell-shaped vault above the Virgin Mary's head intended to convey? Seeking the answers to these questions involves an exciting journey of discovery leading to the solution of Piero della Francesca's enigmas. Подробнее

Typology: Rome, New York, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires 'Typology', volume 2 of the new series 'Christ & Gantenbein Review', presents more than 150 buildings located in Rome, New York, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires that have been analysed by the chair of Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. This selective and subjective inventory of metropolitan and essentially anonymous 20th-century building production provides a basis for urban project creation. In this new book, the buildings are documented with floor plans, axonometric projections, recent photographs and key information. The theoretical essay by Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein and four texts by other authors explain the interactions between the contexts, especially the governing urban rule sets and the buildings, and show the potential for the design of a contemporary urban architecture. Text in English and German. Подробнее
