Félicien Rops (1833-1898) led an existence and creative activity guided by his passions, audacities and torments. He moved to Paris at the age of 41, and was considered to be the best-paid illustrator in the city. All his artwork denounces the bourgeois hypocrisy, while at the same time transgressing the interests of his epoch, by celebrating eroticism, women, desire, the macabre and adventure. Rops was an excellent observer and painted attractive sea and landscapes, but especially his ironic, caricatural and sometimes indecent lithos and engravings were and still are very much appreciated by the public. This is proven by the success of the Félicien Rops Museum in Namur. Established since 1987 in a 19th Century bourgeois house in the heart of old Namur, today the Rops Museum houses over 3,000 of the artist's works, of which almost 300 are presented in the optimal conditions of preservation and security. This book peers over Rops' master works, approaching the different stages of his life and phases of creation. This guide is a perfect introduction to the life and works of Félicien Rops. Bernadette Bonnier, graduate in art history and archaeology, is director of the Department of Culture of the province of Namur. Véronique Carpiaux, graduate in Romance philology, is curator of the Félicien Rops Museum.

• Besides showing some of the most important altarpieces, the book contains a summary catalogue of all extant early altarpieces in France, making it a useful reference tool for scholars and libraries • Catalogue of the exhibition held at the Musée du Louvre, Richelieu wing, April-July 2009 The central element of Christian liturgy, the altarpiece, placed above the alter, is a traditional work of art — a panel placed above and behind the altar, generally in a rectangular form, and made of the most varied materials and techniques, such as sculpture in stone, marble, alabaster, wood, ivory, metalwork, painting on stone, or wood etc. In its collections, the Musée du Louvre holds some remarkable examples of early altarpieces, which are complemented in the forthcoming exhibition by works from other museums and churches. They are mainly French altarpieces (retables), a reflection of the importance of France, and especially of Paris and Saint-Denis, in the genesis of these works of art. Although central to Christian liturgical decoration, altarpieces did not emerge until the 12th century. This book, and the accompanying exhibition recalls the origins of the genre and follows its evolution up to the early 15th century, when altarpieces assumed their more familiar forms. The Spanish master-painter Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) is revered not only for the delicate and sensitive treatment of his subjects but also for his radical political stance and modern sensibility. Towards the end of his life, embittered by the appalling cruelty of the Napoleonic Wars in Spain, Goya decorated the walls of his house outside Madrid with a series of 14 terrifying murals that depicted the underbelly of life and the remorselessness of human existence.
